EDFL: Strathmore overcome Glenroy on Anzac Day in Premier Division clash

The talent pool at Strathmore is continuing to grow with the unveiling of two new young guns as a dominant ruckman got back to his brilliant best on Anzac Day.

The depth at Strathmore is only continuing to grow.

With several key players still sidelined by injury, the Mores unveiled two more young guns, Matt Doody and Max Taylor, in their 15.15 (105) to 11.8 (74) win over Glenroy on Anzac Day.

The pair followed in the footsteps of teammates including Cooper West who made his senior bow against Keilor and has been named in the best two weeks running.

Meanwhile, Callum Clinnick and Luke Butcher have taken big steps forward during their second season of senior footy.

Strathmore coach Matt Horne said the pair loomed as “long-term” senior players for the club.

“Both have come into our program a little later in pre-season due to their other commitments,” he said.

“Matt is a very good player who won our under 18s best and fairest last year. He’s a good mover and I was impressed with his first game.

“Max is a Calder Cannons product with beautiful skills and can still play under 18s footy this season.

“It’s fantastic when you’re able to give senior opportunities to guys who have come through Strathmore’s junior program.

“We’ve still got some top quality to come into the side, which should help balance things out, but everyone who has come in has played their role and they’ve given the coaching staff a good problem to work out.”

The young guns are thriving alongside experienced heads including Andrew Vavra who was named the best player on the ground against Glenroy.

Horne declared it was the ruckman’s best game of the season.

“In the first two weeks his influence on the game wasn’t as great as he would have liked it to be,” he said.

“But I thought the number of hit outs he had really helped to dominate the clearances and create opportunities going forward.”

Brock Egglestone was one player to make the most of those chances finishing with five goals in a stellar display.

“He’s one of those guys would love to have in their team and I’m certainly glad we do,” Horne said.

“He’s as hard, fit and as strong as anyone for his size in the competition. It was nice to see him get some reward for his efforts.”

Will Jury, Daniel Mammoliti and Daniel Mighell were also impressive performers for Strathmore.

For Glenroy, new recruit Hayden Clarke was named in the better players for the third straight game.

Jacob Grigg, Daniel Ferraro, Matt Shannon, Mitch Mills and Tom Bracher also battled hard.

Strathmore now faces an interesting test against East Keilor who is undefeated after the opening three rounds of the season.

Glenroy will seek its first win against Maribyrnong Park.
