An EDFL premiership coach has made the decision to step down from his role just a week after tasting the ultimate success.

Matt Horne is going out on top.

Horne has announced he will step down as Strathmore coach just over a week since the Mores won its first EDFL Premier Division premiership since 2014.

The club confirmed the news in a social media post on Monday morning with Horne citing family and work commitments as the reasons behind his decision.

Horne had led the Mores since 2019 when he took over the top job after previously serving as an assistant coach to Nathan Grima.

“It wasn’t an easy decision after putting in a really big effort to help get the club in this position,” he said.

“One of the main reasons is that I demand a lot from the boys and I expect a lot from there. If I can’t meet that some level of commitment I don’t think it’s fair.

“I think the club is in a really good spot so whoever gets the job is walking into a good place. The playing list is in a really good spot as well.

“It was in a good position when I took over but I think it’s in a better position now.”

While he won’t be involved in an official capacity next season, Horne will still be around the club as a supporter.

His time with Strathmore started way back in the under 10s as a player.

“From the age of 8, I don’t think I’ve missed a Saturday,” he said.

“I don’t want to have any official involvement because the new coach needs the space to do their own thing and make their mark. I’m really looking forward to bringing my kids to the footy, enjoying a couple of beers and supporting the boys.

“I can’t wait to see what’s next for Strathmore.”

Club president John Elliott thanked Horne for his leadership over the past four years.

“Matt epitomises what it means for be “Griff for life” and I wish to thank him for his long service to the club,” he said in a statement.

“With 2021 arguably being his best season as coach, taking the seniors to the top of the ladder with a percentage well ahead of all challengers, I have no doubt we would have taken out the premiership that year if not for Covid.

“Season 2022 proved to be the possibly the most challenging with numerous players unavailable early in the season, but Matt kept the group focused to climb the ladder after being out of the four at times.

“Thank you Matt for your commitment to our great club. We wish you, Sarah and your young family nothing but good fortune for the future.”

Strathmore is currently advertising coaching positions for multiple roles with information available on its Facebook page.
