EDFL: Jordan Gloury handed 12-week suspension, now facing life ban

A local footballer has been handed a huge ban over two hits which sparked a grand final brawl at the weekend with his career now hanging in the balance.

Hit sparks all-in brawl

A local footballer could be banned for life after being suspended over two high hits that sparked a grand final brawl.

West Coburg playing assistant coach Jordan Gloury was last night handed a 12-week suspension for two hits during Saturday’s Essendon District Football League Division 1 grand final against Deer Park.

It’s understood the penalty has pushed Gloury over the life ban threshold of 16 weeks set by AFL Victoria.

The EDFL’s independent tribunal gave Gloury four weeks for his high hit on Jack Dorgan and another eight matches for the hit on Jake McKenzie, the brother of Port Adelaide defender Trent.

It’s believed an appeal is being considered by both parties.

In a statement released on Wednesday morning, the EDFL did not reveal the length of the ban handed down which had been confirmed by this masthead.

“The charges against a West Coburg player arising from the match reports made in the grand final between Deer Park FC and West Coburg FC have been dealt with by the independent tribunal,” the statement said.

“As both parties are considering their respective appeal rights, the EDFL will not make announcements on this matter until it is finalised either on the hearing of the appeal (if one is lodged) or if no appeal is lodged on the expiration of the period of time allowed for the lodging of an appeal.”

The league said it was also aware of Gloury being targeted online.

“The EDFL has been informed that personal attacks and threats have been made on social media against the player charged and his family,” the statement said.

“The EDFL condemns the making of threats against any individuals and points out that such actions are contrary to the EDFL policies, in particular its media policy.”

It’s understood further tribunal cases related to the grand final will take place later this week.
