Jack Ziebell is locked in for a local footy return in 2024.

The recently retired North Melbourne champion will play for Avondale Heights in an Essendon District Football League blockbuster against Aberfeldie on Anzac Day.

He will play under the guidance of father in law Paddy Byrne who will return to coach the Big White V this year in the game at Canning Reserve.

Ziebell could also play alongside his younger brother Bailey who is an emerging midfielder at the club while his brother-in-law, Connor Byrne, has returned.

“This is a really exciting opportunity for the club,” Paddy said.

“Hopefully we might be able to get a few more out of him in the second half of the season but it will depend on his Richmond commitments. The Tigers assistant coaching role is his first priority and it will depend on the fixture.

“We’ll see how he pulls up but he’s really excited to be involved on such a big occasion for the club.”

Byrne said it was clear which position Ziebell would play in when he does line up.

In his last season at the top level, the 32-year-old was switched into defence.

“Zero chance,” Byrne laughed when asked if his new star recruit would play across half back.

“Most likely out of the square.”

Ziebell has already had an off-field involvement with Heights throughout the pre-season, guiding the players through a leadership session.

He had done so in previous years during Byrne’s first stint as coach.

“I thought it was really important for us because we’ve got such a young group with so many new faces,” he said.

“Leadership is one of the biggest traits you need in a footy team.”

Away from Ziebell’s involvement, Byrne said Avondale Heights was building nicely towards the start of the new season.

The Big White V have had over 60 players on the training track regularly.

“We’re looking at a thirds team,” he said.

“There’s a really good vibe around the club at the moment. We brought in some new recruits with a bit more experience to help those younger guys as well.”

Avondale Heights will travel to take on Greenvale in round one.
