EDFL: Airport West overcomes Westmeadows in Division 1 Anzac Day clash

Airport West coach Trent Rogers wasn’t afraid to mince his words at halftime during his side’s win over Westmeadows as he demanded more from his playing group.

Airport West coach Trent Rogers has never been afraid to mince his words towards his players.

On Anzac Day, a passionate halftime speech worked wonders as the Eagles overcame a nine-goal second term from Westmeadows to complete a thrilling comeback.

The Eagles eventually ran out 18.14 (122) to 13.8 (84) winners.

“To Westmeadows’ credit they played some great footy in the first half and made the most of their chances,” Rogers said.

“I said to the boys we weren’t running hard enough both ways and we were waiting for someone else to do something.

“We needed someone to get their hands dirty and thankfully the boys responded.

“We believe we’re a fit side and I think that helped us to run over the top in the second half.

“I think my heart rate dropped by about by about 40 or 50 beats a minute once we got back in front about midway through the third quarter.”

Westmeadows welcomed back Ferras Merhi and George Nabbout on Monday with Rogers admitting it had changed some of his team’s plans heading into the game.

“Those two boys are both outstanding players,” he said.

“We knew they were going to have a big impact especially on contested footy which proved to be the case in the first half but I thought we were able to limit them after halftime.

“I know Westmeadows are 1-2 after the first three games but I still think they’re a top four side who you have to be on your game against.”

Ben Nelson was the best player on the ground for the Eagles in an impressive display which included a goal while Lucas Muratore led all comers on the scoreboard with four majors.

Recruit Ibrahim Taha also produced his best display in his new colours with two majors of his own.

Nicholas Franzi, Alex Penaluna and Lachlan Di Sebastiano were also impressive.

Rogers will also have some big decisions to make in the coming weeks with Aaron Di Matteo, Anthony Aloi and Luke Sultana set to return.

“We’ve felt the luxury of having some depth this season,” he said.

“We had a guys including Jesse McVeigh come in and have a big impact for us which has been really pleasing. The short turnaround to Saturday might mean we have the opportunity to rest some sore boys but that’s something we will decide later in the week.”

The Eagles will now turn their attention to Moonee Valley, meanwhile, Westmeadows will welcome back Roxburgh Park.
