East Keilor president Pat Christofi says the decision to sack Rocky Iannello was made for the “better of” the Cougars.
Iannello was relieved of his duties as senior coach of the Essendon District league club after just 12 games.
He had guided them to third on the Premier Division ladder.
Christofi and Ali Hamad have been appointed co-coaches for the remainder of the season “due to the timing of the decision”.
“This decision was made with a heavy heart and was not taken lightly,” Christofi said in a statement posted to the club’s social media channels.
“Rocky has brought many amazing aspects to our club and for that we thank him for his hard work and dedication.
“There are a number of reasons that lead to this choice. I appreciate there are members that may be upset by this and may not understand the decision made by the committee and myself.
“However, please bear in mind, this decision was made for the better of our club and in line with our goals and ambitions that were discussed with Rocky at the time of his appointment.
“The committee and I strive to achieve excellence for our club. We have put our heart and souls into building a premiership club for our future generations.
“I apologise to those who feel let down by the decision, but as a club we stand together. Please be respectful to all those involved.”
