Aberfeldie forward Kyle Reimers issued an ominous warning to the reigning premier’s rivals with a best-afield display in his side’s victory over Avondale Heights on Anzac Day.

Reimers bagged seven goals in his best return since May 2016 as Abers scored a crushing 59-point win, 18.16 (124) to 10.5 (65).

He formed a potent one-two punch with Jayden Foster, who contributed five majors.

The 30-year-old has 12 goals from three appearances in 2019 in a major boost to Aberfeldie’s hopes of completing a three-peat of flags.

“You have to give Kyle Reimers some credit I think,” co-coach Adam Potter said.

“We obviously had the success last year … he was out of the side (after having) injury after injury and not getting that opportunity.

“He’s had a really good summer and was back to what he can do, which was being really active in terms of chasing and tackling and putting pressure on.

“He was rewarded on the lead, was strong in the air and finished his work, which was really pleasing.”

Reimers was limited to just two senior games last season and missed the grand final after booting 101 goals from 31 matches in the previous two years.

He claimed the Johnson Parker Medal for best on ground as Abers moved to 3-0.

“He’s a classy player at this level,” Potter said of the former Essendon player.

“He’s done the work and put himself in a really good position to have a good year.

“I think his first two games were OK by his standards, but it was definitely his best game going back to at least 2017.”

Defenders Ryan Allan and Luke Davis and midfielder Jaryd Cachia also played key roles in the success.

“I think he’s one of the most dominant key defenders in the competition and has been for some time,” Potter said of Allan.

“He’s really important to our structure, alongside Luke Davis, Josh Toy and Daniel Thompson.”

Booing overshadows thrilling AFL game

Aberfeldie established a 32-point advantage at the main break before completing the job with aplomb in the second half.

While it did blow some opportunities, Potter was otherwise satisfied with the performance.

“I think it’s the first time this year we’ve been able to put four quarters together,” he said.

“We kicked five goals in the first, third and fourth quarters and 3.6 in the second quarter, but that was probably our most dominant quarter and really set us up for the rest of the game.

“We were dominant in terms of time in forward half and really got the ball into some good areas, but we were indirect with our shots on goal.”

Abers faces a big test in Round 4 when it meets Paul Chapman’s Greenvale at Clifton Park.

“I still think there’s improvement within our squad, and that’s the most important thing,” Potter said.

“It’s a really big game against Greenvale, so we’re looking forward to that challenge.”
