Glenroy has thrown its support behind coach Ross Terranova amid a testing season for the EDFL Premier Division outfit.

The Roys had targeted eight wins this year after an encouraging 2018 in the top flight, but enter Saturday’s crucial clash with Avondale Heights with a 1-1-8 record and in relegation contention.

The club claimed four victories last season after Terranova led it to the 2017 Division 1 flag.

“Ross is doing a great job,” Glenroy president Murray Nilsson said.

“Obviously he is four years in, so Ross knows we’ll sit down at the end of the year.

“But couldn’t be happier with what Ross is doing. His attention to detail is first rate, his enthusiasm can’t be faulted and they’re all the factors you look for once a coach has been at a club for three-plus years.

“Right now, he’s ticking all the boxes. Ross is well aware of all that. We’re in constant conversation, so we’re all very comfortable where it’s at.”

Lapses and wayward kicking for goal have proven costly for the Roys.

The club has also been hit hard by injury, with Aaron Kite (foot stress fracture) and Jayden Walker (knee tendinitis) both out for the season after making just four appearances between them.

VFL commitments with Coburg have limited Jonty Neaves to five games, while Joshua Trembearth has managed just one senior match.

Dual best-and-fairest winner Matt Walker will also not be eligible to play until Round 17 after copping a six-week suspension.

But Nilsson said the Roys were capable of scoring “two or three wins” in the run home to ensure their survival in the top tier.

“I think we’ve got about 16 players injured at the moment, not all senior players obviously,” he said.

“That just affects your depth and the pressure coming from the twos. They’re all contributing factors, but the bottom line is, the list is good enough to compete against the very good sides but you can’t afford to have lapses, and that’s what we’ve got to get better at.

“It’s a cut-throat competition. If we don’t get it together in the next eight weeks, we could find ourselves out of it.

“It’s a bit disappointing to be honest. We were pretty confident we’d improved our list and our best has been easily good enough, but the gap between our best and worst is too big.

“When we have our down times in games, (opposition) sides score heavily and it costs you games. It’s something Ross and the coaches are working on tirelessly obviously, but the players have just got to get more consistent with staying in games.”
