EDFL 2019: Cameron Cloke boots 10 goals in Jacana’s Division 2 win

Cameron Cloke was in red-hot form with 10 goals for Jacana in EDFL Division 2 on Saturday, but it was not enough to earn a mention in his team’s best players.

Ardent EDFL supporters poring over the goalkickers and best players in Round 3 may have needed to take a second look.

Cameron Cloke booted 10 goals in Jacana’s 156-point rout of Keilor Park in Division 2, usually enough for automatic inclusion in the best six.

Instead Craig Poynter, Kane Murfett, Shanyn Kearney, Cooper McPharlane, Marc Douthwaite and Corey McCawley were recognised for their efforts in the 28.11 (179) to 3.5 (23) win.

Jaguars coach Matthew Huy described Cloke’s performance against the struggling Devils as “solid”.

“He’d probably be stiff not to get in our best, but it was a team effort,” Huy said.

“Bryce Kimuliatis in the middle absolutely dominated as well. All the midfielders really dominated all day and the backline was very, very solid.”

Cloke returned to Jacana over the off-season after booting 127 goals for the club in 2017.

He has 20 majors from three games in 2019, proving he remains a force in the suburban ranks.

But Cloke’s presence has also been valuable for the Jaguars and their first-year coach after they suffered two losses by a combined margin of 144 points to start the season.

Jacana was relegated from Division 1 last year and the success over Keilor Park was desperately needed.

“Cam’s been fantastic,” Huy said.

“Him coming across this year has really, really helped me out.

“He’s just been phenomenal really with the way he goes about his business.

“Last time he was here, he wasn’t as fit probably, but the leadership he gives around the boys and helping the other boys step up has been phenomenal.

“The way we started was a little bit slower than we were hoping for. But we have got a fair few new faces in the side this year, so the boys have just to learn to jell, which they’re starting to do, and that makes a big difference.

“Once we’ve got players playing for each other, it makes a huge difference.”

Keilor Park’s backmen were kept busy, with McPharlane (five goals), Poynter (four) and Murfett and Mathew Siciliano (both three) all hitting the scoreboard hard.

The Devils have returned to the field after a season in recess and Huy said they never gave up.

He also admitted doubts had crept in after an underwhelming opening fortnight.

“They (the players) started having some doubts,” Huy said.

“To come across and win, and win convincingly, was fantastic.

“Keilor Park was down by 100 points, but they did not stop and were relentless all game. A lot of other clubs probably would have thrown in the towel. Credit to them.

“I wouldn’t say (the win) was expected because you can’t expect anything in this division this year. It’s a pretty strong division we’re facing.

“But we got the win…and the boys played exceptionally well to run the game out, play as a team and get the four points.”

Jacana will next tackle Moonee Valley at home on Saturday.
