Kyabram out to start another dynasty in Goulburn Valley football

Kyabram has signalled its intent to surge in the GVFL next season by signing an ex-AFL player, a current VFL player and a club great.

Kyabram has embarked on a recruiting spree at it seeks to surge back up the ladder in the Goulburn Valley Football League.

Bombers president Peter Learmonth is confident his club’s moves so far are shaping the club to be successful for years to come, and not just one season.

The Goulburn Valley Football League side has been one of the busiest this off-season, signing three key players.

Former Brisbane Lions and Carlton VFL player Toby Wooller has joined the club alongside Will Golds, who will play for the Bombers when he isn’t playing for Essendon in the VFL.

Finally, former Kyabram player Liam Ogden returns after playing for Pascoe Vale in the Essendon Football League for the past four seasons.

All three provide midfield run with Wooller able to play in multiple positions as a key target.

“We lacked a bit of midfield (last season),” Learmonth said.

“So we looked at a couple of top liners, we’ve got a lot of depth, so that’s why we sort of went that way (getting top recruits).”

It also helps two of the three recruits have history at the club.

Wooller’s grandfather Fred coached the club to a premiership while Ogden played 195 games for the team in the past decade, winning premierships with the Bombers in 2016, 2017 and 2019.

Ogden was also involved in the club’s 64-game unbeaten run in the GVFL from 2016 to 2018.

Learmonth is now looking towards this generation of players working towards the same level as the great Kyabram teams of the past.

“We’re looking to build another dynasty,” he said.

“We’re starting to build the kids and using the experience of ex-AFL players to develop.

“Our biggest challenge is develop, develop what we’ve got.

“And build, slowly build, into another big dynasty.”

Learmonth said the club was unlikely to add to their big recruits for next season.

“I don’t think there will be any more but the stuff (signings) generated interest and we get a few phone calls about others coming.

“You never know what pops up.”

The club will hold its annual general meeting on November 27.
