Meet the hidden gems of grassroots Aussie rules from across the state, ranging from emerging talents to older heads who find a way to get the job done.

NORTH-EAST VICTORIA

Victoria’s north east is home to some of the best country footballers in the state.

From young guns to premiership heroes, to best and fairests, we’ve found 40 of the best.

The key position player has been one of the leading goalkickers in the competition. He’s kicked 72 goals in 18 games this season to be the best at the club for goals.

The defender continues to be one of the best for the Hoppers as the club tries to chase a finals spot this year. He’s been in the best in 12 of 17 games in just his second season of seniors.

Ryan Beveridge, CDHBU (Hume)

New to the club this season and proving to be a sensational pick up. Among the leading players in the league.

Luke Bramley, Murray Magpies (Hume)

While his side might not have won a game in season 2023, Bramley has been nothing short of sensational with a mention in the best every week.

Dayne Carey, Cudgewa (Upper Murray)

After crossing from Beechworth, Carey has established as a key part of the club’s premiership pursuit.

Trent Castles, Jindera (Hume)

The Hume league’s leading goal kicker this season, Castles is more than a handful for opposition defenders.

Anthony Ciancio, King Valley (Ovens and King)

The co-coach, who has just played his 50th match, has been among the best for the Kangaroos this season. He has kicked 46 goals in 18 matches.

Ben Clarke, Milawa (Ovens and King)

The former best and fairest for the club has been impressive again in the midfield. Has kicked almost a goal a game and been in the best in 11 of 16 games.

Kyle Collisson, Benalla All Blacks (Ovens and King)

A premiership winner last year for the Panthers, Collisson has stayed at the club and been one of the best in a tough season for the club. He’s been in the best players in all but three games and recently celebrated his 100th game.

Ben Commins, Bullioh (Upper Murray)

Despite only 12 games to date, Commins’ six mentions in the best underline his importance to the Bullioh side.

Kyle Cooper, Chiltern (Tallangatta)

Has had a better year this season than last year when he won the clubs best and fairest. Cooper has kicked 47 goals in 18 games, the most he’s kicked in a season, and been in the best in 14 games. One of the best rising stars in the league.

Samuel Crawshaw, Jindera (Hume)

Coming up to the 100-game mark for Jindera, Crawshaw continues to impress. His back half of the season has been sensational.

Jordyn Croucher, Kiewa Sandy Creek (Tallangatta)

Has impressed again in just his second season of senior footy. The leading goalkicker at the ladder leaders has kicked 40 goals in 16 games.

Nick Donaghey, Yackandandah (Tallangatta)

The captain is the third leading goalkicker in the competition, kicking 69 goals in 15 games. Importantly, he’s been among the best in 12 of the 15 games, leading from the front with goals and his leadership.

Connor Galvin, Osborne (Hume)

One of the stars of the competition and enjoying another fantastic season.

Adam Enever, North Wangaratta (Ovens and King)

One of the best players for the Hawks this season. The defender who can also play in the ruck has been among the best for North Wangaratta in 17 of 19 games this season.

Jarrad Farwell, Barnawartha (Tallangatta)

In his first season for the Tigers, he’s been one of the best, averaging just under a goal a game in the midfield and being among the best in 15 of 19 games. He formerly played for Hently in the Hume league and Rutherglen in the Tallangatta league.

Angus Grigg, Lockhart (Hume)

Enjoying a standout season for his side with 14 mentions in the best so far.

Jordan Harrington, Dederang Mt-Beauty (Tallangatta)

The midfielder has kicked 31 goals in 16 games this season after joining the club in the off-season. He’s also been in the best every game he’s played. A vital player for the team.

Jack Haugen, Kiewa Sandy Creek (Tallangatta)

Been impressive for the Hawks in his first year at the club. Has kicked 15 goals in 17 games and has been in the best in all but three games.

Steven Hoffman, Tumbarumba (Upper Murray)

Quickly approaching 150 games for the club. He’s enjoyed a fine season after helping his side to a second-place finish.

Frazer Judd, Greta (Ovens and King)

On track for his best haul of goals in the competition in his career. Judd has kicked 80 goals in 15 games to help Greta to be a premiership threat.

Riley Knobel, Culcairn (Hume)

Knobel has consistently been among the better players for his side this season.

Daniel Lieschke, Rand-Walbundrie-Walla (Hume)

Celebrated his 250th game for the club earlier this year and is putting together an impressive season.

Andrew Mackinlay, Holbrook (Hume)

A club legend. Mackinlay remains one of the most devastating forwards in the competition with 54 majors for the season.

James McClounan, Greta (Ovens and King)

The half forward has been one of the best for the Blues with 35 goals in 18 games after joining from Wangaratta in the Ovens and Murray. Has been named in the best players in 14 of 18 games.

Ben McIntosh, Yackandandah (Tallangatta)

The midfielder has been one of the best for the Kangaroos again this season, after winning the club’s best and fairest last year. He’s kicked a goal a game.

Darcy McKimmie, Cudgewa (Upper Murray)

One of the best for this year’s premiers, being named in the best in 14 out of 14 games.

Duncan McMaster, Osborne (Hume)

McMaster remains one of the most reliable players for a powerhouse of the local competition.

Scott Meyer, Chiltern (Tallangatta)

Last year’s best and fairest has had another dominant season in the ruck this year. He’s been in the best in 11 out of 14 games to lead the club to another premiership challenge.

Luke Murray, Bonnie Doon (Ovens and King)

The leading goalkicker for the ladder leaders with 74 goals in 18 games. In 11 games he has kicked four or more goals.

Fletcher Parker, Holbrook (Hume)

A rising star of the competition. Parker has shown this season he knows where the goals are.

Adam Prior, Cudgewa (Upper Murray)

The competition’s leading goalkicker this season with 71 majors. The former WAFL talent has been a sensational pick up, helping the team to win the premiership.

Ethan Redcliffe, Mitta United (Tallangatta)

One of only a handful of players in country footy to kick 100 goals this season. The forward has been one of the best for Mitta, kicking 110 goals.

George Sandral, Billabong Crows (Hume)

One of his side’s most consistent performers this season in what has otherwise been a difficult year.

Keith Tallent, Brock/Burrum Saints (Hume)

A young gun with plenty of potential. He’s a name to watch in the coming years.

Cooper Thomason, United Bright (Ovens and King)

The leading goalkicker in the Ovens and King competition with 82 goals in 18 matches. Has kicked more than 140 goals in the past two season.

Charlie Williams, Thurgoona (Tallangatta)

The two-time premiership winner with the Bulldogs has had a great return to the club this season. He has 14 goals in 16 games and been in the best in 11 matches.

Matthew Wilson, Howlong (Hume)

In his first season with the club, after crossing from Corowa Rutherglen, Wilson has established himself as a consistent performer.

Abraham Wooden, Lockhart (Hume)

Consistently in the better players for his side this season. Has also shown an ability to hit the scoreboard.


WESTERN VICTORIA


Victoria’s west is home to some of the best country footballers in the state.

From young guns to premiership heroes, we’ve found 40 of the best.

Connor Barby, Old Collegians (Warrnambool)

In a tough year for the Warriors, the ruckman continues to show why he is one of the best in the competition. He’s been in the best in all but one game of 17 played for the club.

Harry Bensch, Penshurst (Mininera and District)

One of the rising stars of the competition. Bensch is putting together an impressive season with 13 mentions in the best.

Kaleb Bowd, Dartmoor (South West District)

Joined his club in the off-season and has proven to be a great recruit. Named in the best 14 times this season.

Brodhi Carracher, Cavendish (South West District)

Arrived from Terang Mortlake in the off-season and has proven to be one of the recruits of the season so far.

Simon Close, Harrow Balmoral (Horsham)

The leading goalkicker in the Horsham league with 82 goals in 16 matches. He’s kicked five or more goals in nine games this season.

Ashley Clugston, Jeparit-Rainbow (Horsham)

The captain has been leading from the front this year, kicking the most goals for the club. He has kicked 52 goals in 17 matches.

Dom Dare, Alvie (Colac and District)

Brought up the century of goals this season and now sits on 113 for the season. Could end the year as a premiership player if everything goes right for the Swans.

Jackson Dark, Stawell (Wimmera)

One of the standout defenders in the competition who has had another fantastic season. He’s been in the best in 13 out of 16 games.

Frazer Driscoll, Nhill (Wimmera)

The utility has been the best for the Tigers this season, being in the best players in 13 of 15 games. Driscoll is a former SANFL player who made a couple of appearances for North Adelaide.

Tyler Flanigan, Irrewarra-Beeac (Colac and District)

Continues to grow in stature every year with the finals aspirant. Has been impressive in every way this year.

Jarrod Garth, Horsham Saints (Wimmera)

After only returning to football last year, following Covid and an ACL injury, Garth has come back in style with the Saints.

Samuel Giblett, South Colac (Colac and District)

Giblett has become an important part of South’s side during the last two seasons. This year, he has been named in the best nine times and kicked 20 goals.

Hamish Gleeson, Hawkesdale Macarthur (Mininera and District)

Enjoying a fine first season with the club having been named in the best in 14 out of 16 games.

Sam Godden, Dimboola (Wimmera)

The midfielder/forward player has averaged almost two goals a game in his return to the club from Pascoe Vale in the Essendon District league. He’s kicked 27 goals in 15 games.

Robert Hare, Allansford (Warrnambool)

One of the leading goalkickers in the Warrnambool District league, kicking 89 goals in 18 games. He’s kicked more than 30 per cent of the teams total in the competition.

Simon Hobbs, Kalkee (Horsham)

Has had one of his best season for the Killers as he reached more than 150 appearances for the club. Hobbs has kicked 17 goals in 16 games and been in the best in all but one match.

Jesse Horan, Woorndoo Mortlake (Mininera and District)

Enjoying another fine season for the second placed Tigers. Horan is the competition’s second leading goalkicker with 62 for the season.

James Hughes, Lorne (Colac and District)

Hughes is now in his second season with the club and is closing in on the 100-goal mark. Has 59 majors for the season and has been named in the best 10 times.

Braydon Ison, Rupanyup (Horsham)

On track for his largest goal haul in a season in the Horsham league after moving to Rupanyup in the off-season. Has kicked 65 goals in 17 games.

Matt Johns, Warrack (Wimmera)

The ruckman has been one of the best in a tough season for the Eagles. Johns has been among the best in 10 out of 13 games, including the team’s closest loss of the season against Nhill in round four.

Mitch Martin, Horsham Saints (Wimmera)

The leading goalkicker in the Wimmera league with 57 goals from 17 games. Been one of the best players in the Saints rise to second on the ladder.

Logan McLeod, Russells Creek (Warrnambool)

Has been a star midfielder for Russells Creek since debuting for the club earlier this season. In all 13 matches he’s played he has been among the best and is a genuine chance of winning the best and fairest in the league.

Tom Mills, Ararat (Wimmera)

The former VFL player and Ararat player has once again been a leading target upfront this season. He’s kicked 38 goals in 16 games.

The former Bendigo Pioneer is enjoying an impressive season for his new club who playing finals footy.

Jordan Motton, Horsham Demons (Wimmera)

Has kicked 40 goals in 15 matches for the team with the second worst attack in the competition.

Brody Pope, Horsham Demons (Wimmera)

The former Greater Western Rebel has been a star this season for the Demons, being in the best in 14 out of 16 games he’s played.

Zeke Reeves, Panmure (Warrnambool)

The utility has been one of the best players for the reigning premiers in just his second year of seniors. Capable of playing in the midfield, in the ruck, and in the forward half.

Elijah Reid, Western Eagles (Colac and District)

While it might have been a difficult season for the Eagles, the emerging big man has put together a great season.

Lachlan Reilly, Wickliffe/Lake Bolac (Mininera and District)

The former Tasmanian State League player has made an immediate impression for his new club after crossing from Geelong Amateur. He’s kicked 37 goals and been named in the best 13 times so far.

Anthony Rosato, Tatyoon (Mininera and District)

Has arguably had a better season than last year. Rosato has 21 goals and 13 mentions in the best.

Tanner Smith, Minyip Murtoa (Wimmera)

The former Fremantle player has impressed with the reigning premiers this season. He’s averaged almost one goal a game and has been in the best in 10 out of 17 games.

Campbell Tanis, Colac Imperials (Colac and District)

The former Geelong Falcon has impressed in his first season at the club, often appearing among his side’s better players.

Jack Vague, Noradjuha Quantong (Horsham)

The ruckman has been one of the best for the Bombers this season, helping the side to be one of the top teams in the competition. He’s been in the best players in 15 out of 18 games.

Josh Webster, Southern Mallee Giants (Wimmera)

The forward has had another strong season for the Giants in the Wimmera league. He’s averaged more than two goals a game, kicking 30 goals in 12 games.

Dylan Weir, Merrivale (Warrnambool)

Weird has been the leading goalscorer for the unbeaten Merrivale team in the Warrambool District league. Has kicked 90 goals in 19 games and has kicked at least one goal a game.

Jason Westley, Pimpinio (Horsham)

The rover is not only winning lots of the ball but has kicked plenty of goals. Westley has kicked 32 goals in 15 games and has been in the best in 13 of them.

Tom Williamson, Ararat (Wimmera)

Has impressed in his first season back at the Rats after playing for Carlton in the AFL. Has kicked 32 goals in 15 matches.

James Willsher, Nirranda (Warrnambool)

Continues to be one of the best for the Blues in the midfield. Wilsher has been in the best in 13 of 19 games and has now played more than 100 games for the club.

Jordi Withers, Tyrendarra (South West District)

Withers still has plenty of room for growth given his age. He is currently the competition’s leading goalkicker this season with 66.

Jayden Wright, Ararat Eagles (Mininera and District)
Enjoying some sort of season for the Eagles with 41 goals and 15 mentions in the best. Set to be right in league medal contention.


GIPPSLAND

The Gippsland country footy scene is home to plenty of talented players.

Here are 50 of the best of 2023.

Ryan Atherton, Ellinbank (Ellinbank District)

Been one of the best for the premiership contenders this season in the midfield. He’s been in the best in all but two games this season and was particularly impressive in the sides win against Buln Buln, which was the Lyrebirds only loss this season.

Hayden Baker, Buln Buln (Ellinbank District)

The stalwart has helped the Lyrebirds to be one of the best teams in the competition this year. He’s kicked 41 goals in 16 games, the largest haul he has ever got for the team in more than a decade of playing for the club.

Nicholas Baltas, Inverloch-Kongwak (West Gippsland)

Arrived at the club from Caulfield Grammarians in the VAFA before the season and has delivered strongly. The former VFL manhas kicked 26 goals and been named in the better players six times.

Declan Barnett, Rosedale (North Gippsland)

Been one of the best for the club as the Blues fight to make the finals. He’s kicked 16 goals in 14 games been in the best players for more than half of the season.

Hayden Bertoli-Simmonds, Tooradin-Dalmore (West Gippsland)

The former state league talent (last year with Williamstown) has been nothing short of sensational for his club.

Tom Betts, Wy Yung (East Gippsland)

Betts has played an important role for his side this year with eight mentions in the best.

Caleb Calwyn, Boisdale Briagolong (East Gippsland)

After arriving from Western Australia at the start of the season, Calwyn has announced himself as one of the stars of the competition. Has 66 goals in 14 games.

Liam Carroll, Lakes Entrance (East Gippsland)

Making up for lost time after playing just four games last year. Carroll has been named in the best in 12 out of 13 games.

Returned to the club where he played some of his junior footy from Maffra before 2023. Has made an immediate impact with 24 goals and 11 mentions in the best.

Patrick Charles, Newborough (Mid Gippsland)

The winger has been one of the best for the unbeaten Bulldogs this season. He’s been in the best nine of 13 games and has kicked a goal every two games.

Ben Cheffers, Yinnar (Mid Gippsland)

One of the most consistent players for the reigning premiers over the past couple of years. Has been runner-up in their best and fairest in 2021 and won the most consistent award at the club last year. This year, he’s been among the best in 14 of 16 games for the club.

Michael Cooke, Foster (Mid Gippsland)

The forward, since joining last year, has kicked 50 goals for the club in 16 games. This includes 31 goals this season in 13 games. In seven games he has kicked three or more goals.

Benjamin Eddy, Kilcunda Bass (West Gippsland)

One of the most consistent players in the competition. In his second season with the club.

Daniel Farmer, Woodside (North Gippsland)

The leading goalkicker for Woodside this year with 76 goals in 15 games. In five games this season the forward has kicked six goals or more, including two games of more than 10.

Nathan Gardiner, Cora Lynn (West Gippsland)

On track to beat his 88-goal effort last season, as he currently sits on 85 having hit double figures twice. Clearly the leading goalkicker in the competition.

Dylan Garnham, Yarram (North Gippsland)

The premiership player in reserves at Leongatha has made an impressive start to his career at Yarram. Has kicked more than a goal a game, kicking 21 goals in 14 matches and has been in the best 10 times.

Darren Granger, Longwarry (Ellinbank District)

The Crows midfielder has averaged more than a goal a game this season, kicking 20 goals in 16 games. He’s also been in the best in 13 of 16 games.

Jai Hayward, Omeo-Benambra (Omeo District)

In a year where he celebrated his 200th game for the club, Hayward was consistently among the better players. Won the league best-and-fairest last year.

Conor Harvey, Swifts Creek (Omeo District)

After returning to the club at the start of the season, Harvey produced fantastic form to help his side to the top of the ladder.

Jack Hazendonk, Poowong (Ellinbank District)

A three-time best and fairest in the competition who could make it four with his season so far. The midfielder/forward is leading the club in goals with 20 in 15 games and has also been in the best players nine times. A star in the competition.

Marcus Hottes, Wy Yung (East Gippsland)

After coming across from the Outer East, Hottes has become a consistent performer for the side on top of the ladder.

Thomas Jolly, Boisdale Briagolong (East Gippsland)

After crossing from Maffra, he’s become a dangerous player with 33 goals and 10 mentions in the best.

Brad Kelleher, Traralgon Tyers United (North Gippsland)

The forward has kicked 53 goals in 12 games for the unbeaten Bombers in the competition. In the past eight games he has kicked three goals or more.

Luke Kinder, Neerim South (Ellinbank District)

The leading goalkicker in the Ellinbank District league. On track to kick more goals than last year when he finished third in the goalkicking. Has 49 goals in 15 games.

Dean Macdonald, Yallourn Yallourn North (North Gippsland)

The former Richmond Tiger is the leading goalkicker in the North Gippsland league, kicking 79 goals in 15 games. In 13 of the matches he has kicked three goals or more.

Brendan Mason, Boolarra (Mid Gippsland)

The Boolarra senior player has impressed in the midfield this season to not only be one of the best for the club but in the competition. He’s averaged more than one goal a game, kicking 16 this season and has been in the best in 12 of 14 games.

Mason McGarrity, Warragul Industrials (West Gippsland)

In his second full season with the club, McGarrity continues to provide a strong target inside forward 50.

Rob McMillan, Heyfield (North Gippsland)

The new Kangaroos recruit has set the standard for the club this season with his skills and his attack on the footy. He’s been in the best in 13 out of 14 games and would be one of the favourites for the best and fairest at Heyfield.

Curtley Nettleton, Orbost Snowy Rovers (East Gippsland)

Has thrived with greater opportunity after making the move back from Maffra.

Ethan Park, Inverloch-Kongwak (West Gippsland)

The Eagles midfielder has been one of his side’s best this season. His best games have often come across the best teams in the competition.

Pat Pekin, Fish Creek (Mid Gippsland)

Fish Creek has the best defence in the competition and Pekin has been a major part of it. He’s kicked four goals in 13 games and also been in the best players six times.

Shaun Phelan, Ellinbank (Ellinbank District)

The second leading goalscorer in the competition, who has kicked 44 goals in 15 games. In seven games he has kicked three goals or more.

Nate Pipicelli, Nar Nar Goon (West Gippsland)

After spending the majority of last season with the Gippsland Power, Pipicelli has become a senior regular for his home club this year. Has been named in the best in half his games.

Matthew Powell, Thorpdale (Mid Gippsland)

A dominant forward who is well on track to win the leading goalkicker award in the competition. Powell has kicked 57 goals in 14 games as he’s helped Thorpdale become a finals contender.

Jack Redman, Lindenow South (Omeo District)

A fine first season with the club after arriving from Western Australia. Redman has booted 27 goals and been named in the best 11 times.

Blake Safstrom, Sale City (North Gippsland)

Last year’s best and fairest at the Bulldogs is on track to do it again after another impressive season. The midfielder, who only made his senior debut in 2021, has been in the best in 10 out of 11 matches and has kicked nine goals.

Jamie Seymour, Lucknow (East Gippsland)

Seymour has made a strong impression during his first season with the club, locking down a place as a senior regular.

Tate Short, Inverloch-Kongwak (West Gippsland)

The former VFL player has made a strong impression during his first season with the club, being named in the best seven times so far.

Darren Sheen, MDU (Mid Gippsland)

He might have been out for a month and a half during the middle of the season but he’s impressed in the games he has played. Sheen has averaged four goals a game in the eight games and has kicked at least two goals each game.

Tyson Siddle, Buchan (Omeo District)

Consistently among the goals for his side with 31 for the season. Also named in the best nine times.

Max Solomon, Swan Reach (Omeo District)

Despite the club dealing with its own issues, Solomon finished as the competition’s leading goalkicker with 59 from 12 matches.

In a tough season for the Bombers, Tapner has been the best for the club and is on track to win their best and fairest. The young player almost averages a goal a game and has been in the best in 11 of 13 games.

Jack Taylor, Phillip Island (West Gippsland)

The senior captain has helped propel his side into second place on the ladder with a massive season thus far. Has 33 goals and 10 mentions in the best in 15 outings.

Matthew Voss, Koo Wee Rup (West Gippsland)

Remains one of the rising stars of the competition, Voss has been a standout for his club this year.

Jay Walker, Korumburra Bena (West Gippsland)

Despite his side struggling this year, Walker has been a consistent in the best and should run away with the club best-and-fairest.

Max Walton, Phillip Island (West Gippsland)

Spent all season at local level in 2023 after playing between the Coates Talent League and VFL with Box Hill last year.

Chris Wangman, Churchill (North Gippsland)

In the absence of other forwards, Wangman has stood tall, kicking 47 goals in 12 games. This has included four games of kicking more than seven goals.

Jack Weston, Toora (Mid Gippsland)

The former Geelong rookie has impressed as not only coach but as a player for his home club again this season. He’s kicked 15 goals in 11 matches and been the best in nine games. In a season where the team has struggled to score, Weston has kicked more than 15 per cent of the teams total points.

KYABRAM DISTRICT, MURRAY AND PICOLA AND DISTRICT

The Goulburn Murray region is home to some of the best hidden gems in country footy.

Here’s a look at 30 of the top players from across the Murray, Kyabram District and Picola and District competitions.

Harry Beasley, Cobram (Murray)

The former Murray Bushranger has thrived for the Tigers this year in different positions. Has been named in the best in 11 games.

Danny Brewster, Undera (Kyabram)

Has continued his goalkicking form for Undera after kicking 100 goals last year for Natte Bealiba. He’s kicked 54 goals this season.

Charlie Burrows, Waaia (Picola)

The forward has kicked 78 goals this season at more than five goals a game. A former league leading goalkicker, Burrows has had another great year.

Been a standout for the Kangaroos in a tough season. He’s been in the best in 12 of 13 games and has almost kicked almost a goal a game.

Tom Buzza, Numurkah (Murray)

Returned to the club at the start of the year and has played a key role with the Blues in the premiership hunt.

Angus Cameron, Barooga (Murray)

A new recruit out of the VAFA, Cameron has made an immediate impact for the Hawks. Has been named in the best 13 times.

Daniel Campbell, Katunga (Picola)

Has averaged almost five goals a season, helping the team to finals. Campbell has kicked 71 goals this season.

Elliott Cavallaro, Congupna (Murray)

Arrived at the start of the year after winning a premiership with Altona in the WRFL. Has booted 76 goals from 18 games and is one of the smartest forwards in the league.

Zac Cerrone, Lancaster (Kyabram)

The midfielder has been great in the middle and up forward. He’s kicked 36 goals in 15 games to be one of the best for the defending premiers. Last year, he was best on ground in the grand final.

Clancy Congues, Nathalia (Murray)

As consistent as they come for the Purps this season in a year where he celebrated his 200th club game. Has kicked 12 goals and been in the best 11 times.

Owen Conway, Mulwala (Murray)

After premiership success last year, Conway is enjoying another fine season for the Lions with 12 mentions in the best so far.

William Dalton, Nagambie (Kyabram)

In his first full season of senior footy, Dalton has been a revelation. He’s kicked 45 goals in 15 games to be one of the best for Nagambie, who finished the regular season on top.

Liam Evans, Nathalia (Murray)

One of the competition’s leading goalkicker with 94 majors for the season.

Been instrumental in helping Longwood bounce back and be in contention to make finals for the first time in the Kyabram District league. The midfielder has been in the best players in all 14 games he’s played. He joined from Strathfieldsaye.

Dion Gleeson, Congupna (Murray)

After returning to the club at the start of the season, Gleeson has slotted in seamlessly and played a key role for The Road.

Ash Holland, Waaia (Picola)

Last year’s league best and fairest has been great again for the reigning premiers. The ruckman has helped Waaia be one of the best teams in the competition again.

Mitch Lake, Moama (Murray)

Enjoying a fine season with 30 goals and 10 mentions in the best so far.

Tom Lang, Finley (Murray)

In his first season with the NSW club, Lang has established himself as one of the best forwards in the league with 92 goals. He’s a premiership player with St Mary’s in Geelong.

A consistent presence in the Magpies’ line-up and a player you can rely on everything week.

Dylan McNamara, Mulwala (Murray)

A premiership hero who continues to play a key role as one of the more consistent players in the competition.

James Milne, Murchison-Toolamba (Kyabram)

The club stalwart and premiership player is still going strong in the midfield. Has been one of the best players for the club this season as the team chases another premiership.

Been a brick wall in defence for the Bears, being in the best players most weeks for the club. He joined from Mulwala in the Murray league.

This year Strawhorn kicked his 1000th senior goal as he provided a valuable role for Rennie in attack. The forward has kicked 51 goals for the struggling club and has almost scored a fair chunk of the teams score this season.

Desmond Tipuamantumirri, Rumbalara (Murray)

A young gun with plenty of potential. He has been a real shining light for Rumba in an otherwise difficult season. He has been named in the best 13 times.

CENTRAL HIGHLANDS, MARYBOROUGH CASTLEMAINE DISTRICT

The AFL Goldfields region is home to some of the best hidden gems in country footy.

Outside of the Ballarat Football Netball League, the region’s premier competition, the football talent continues to grow.

Here’s a look at some of the best players from across the Central Highlands and Maryborough Castlemaine District competitions.

Cameron Anderson, Harcourt (Maryborough Castlemaine District)

Still in the early days of his senior career, Anderson’s best footy might still be ahead of him. Has 28 goals for the season.

Rupert Armstrong, Rokewood Corindhap (Central Highlands)

The defender has been one of the best for the Hoppers this season, being among the best in 10 of 16 games. In a season where the team won just five games, the former St Joseph’s player was one of the shining lights.

Connor Ascough, Gordon (Central Highlands)

One of the leading players in last year’s premiership charge and he has already shown he’ll be a major part of Gordon going back-to-back if the club wins again. Has kicked 32 goals in 16 games.

Lachlan Bates, Royal Park (Maryborough Castlemaine District))

The young gun is having an impressive season for Royal Park, who will fold at the end of the season. After just one game last year, he played 14 this season going onto be named in the best 13 times.

Harley Bongart, Ballan (Central Highlands)

Bongart has been one of the best for the Blues as he continues to be a major stalwart of the club. Named in the best nine times, kicking 13 goals.

One of the best at the Crows in a winless season. Was in the best 12 times.

Joel Cowan, Trentham (Maryborough Castlemaine District)

One of the stars of the local competition. A former league best-and-fairest who should be right in the mix again this season.

Callum Currie, Newlyn (Central Highlands)

The former VFL player was one of the best for the Cats this season in the midfield, providing a valuable role in the midfield as Newlyn became a finals threat. Kicked 25 goals in 17 games and was named among the best in 13.

Aiden Domic, Buninyong (Central Highlands)

The former VFL player started life in the CHFL well, being among the best each week for Buninyong. The midfielder kicked 25 goals.

Ben Jones, Daylesford (Central Highlands)

The captain led from the led in a tough year for the Bulldogs. The ruckman has been influential in almost every game, being among the best in 14 out of 15 games.

Will Green, Learmonth (Central Highlands)

Won last year’s best-and-fairest for the Lakers. Been one of the best midfielders in the competition this year.

Will Henderson, Dunnstown (Central Highlands)

Continues to flourish with the utility having another standout season. Kicked 14 goals and was named in the best 12 times.

Jake Keogh, Trentham (Maryborough Castlemaine District)

After a century of goals in 2022, Keogh remained a dominant force with 71 majors.

Brodie Leonard-Shannon, Maldon (Maryborough Castlemaine District)

After crossing from Boort in the North Central league, Leonard-Shannon became an important part of Maldon’s side. Kicked 45 goals and named in the best 11 times.

James Lukich, Waubra (Central Highlands)

In a disappointing year for the Roos, Lukich was a shining light. He’s kicked 15 goals in nine matches, making up almost 20 per cent of their score this season.

Joel Mahar, Bungaree (Central Highlands)

Mahar returned to the Central Highlands league in style. The midfielder booted 27 goals and was named in the best nine times.

Andrew McKay, Hepburn (Central Highlands)

The leading goalkicker for not only his team, Hepburn, but the league. McKay kicked 70 goals.

Austin McKenzie, Natte Bealiba (Maryborough Castlemaine District)

Has returned to the footy field this year, after some basketball commitments, and has been nothing short of brilliant.

Rhys Monument, Skipton (Central Highlands)

Kicked 56 goals this year and was named in the best 12 times.

Nathan Murphy, Dunolly (Maryborough Castlemaine District)

Has slotted into the Dunolly line-up seamlessly after crossing from Boort at the start of the season.

Dean O’Brien, Carngham Linton (Central Highlands)

While many would have his brother, former Essendon player Nick O’Brien, in this list, Dean’s season deserves plenty of plaudits. He has 38 goals so far as the club’s remarkable finals run continues.

Darcy Osborne, Talbot (Maryborough Castlemaine District)

The ruckman has been an astute pick up for a Talbot side who remains in the hunt for finals footy.

Zak Rinaldi, Carisbrook (Maryborough Castlemaine District)

Enjoying another fine season for his home club with 28 goals and 13 mentions in the best.

Josh Sargent, Lexton (Maryborough Castlemaine District)

Has fought through Lexton’s struggles as a team to put together an impressive campaign from an individual perspective.

Joel Smith, Newstead (Maryborough Castlemaine District)

Smith has been a very good player for Newstead either side of his stint with Castlemaine in the Bendigo league.

James Thompson, Springbank (Central Highlands)

CENTRAL VICTORIA

The Central Victoria region is home to some of the best hidden gems in country footy.

From those competitions based near Bendigo to those further up north near the border and the River Murray, there is plenty of talent on show.

Here’s a look at some of the best players from across five competitions who call Central Victoria home.

A late move to Nyah Nyah West has paid dividends for Ahmat-Watkins. He kicked 40 goals in 11 games.

The former South Bendigo star has been a fantastic acquisition for White Hills with 69 majors. He’s kicked a goal in every match except one.

Adam Baird, Mount Pleasant (Heathcote District)

Has played with the club for the last two seasons becoming one of the more impressive players in the competition.

Tom Bull, Ultima (Golden Rivers)

Returned to the club this season and continues to be one of the Roos most important players.

Mitchell Carson, Elmore (Heathcote District)

Carson is backing up an impressive first season at the club with more consistent form. He was awarded the club’s best first year player award last season.

The leading goalkicker in the North Central competition. Dunstan has been prolific in front of goal, kicking 93 goals in 17 matches.

Amos Farrell, Moulamein (Golden Rivers)

Fresh off a one-year stint with Craigieburn, Farrell has made a major impact for the Swans. In 16 games, he’s booted 25 goals and been in the best 12 times.

Rhys Free, Cohuna (Central Murray)

One of the leading kickers in the Central Murray league. Free kicked 47 goals.

Laine Fitzgerald, Colbinabbin (Heathcote District)

Arrived with his three brothers before the 2021 season and has continued to go from strength-to-strength. Another impressive season in 2023 with 20 goals and 10 mentions in the best.

One of the most consistent players in the competition, Klemm has shown an ability to impact the game in different ways.

One of the leading forwards in the Loddon Valley league and has been pivotal in Bridgewater’s attack.

Braden Padmore, Heathcote (Heathcote District)

In his second season with the Saints, Padmore continues to play a key role in their pursuit of a premiership. Won the club’s best-and-fairest last season while finishing second in the league medal.

Tyler Phillips, LBU (Heathcote District)

Last year’s league medallist is enjoying another fine season for the Cats. He’ll be right in contention for another club best-and-fairest.

Russell Rich, Wandella (Golden Rivers)

The 2022 best-and-fairest has showed no signs of slowing down in the Bombers midfield this season.

Nicholas Rippon, Birchip Watchem (North Central)

The former VFL best and fairest winner and North Ballarat and North Melbourne player has been one of the best players in the North Central competition. The midfielder has kicked 26 goals in 12 games and been in the best players in 15 of them.

Lachlan Ritchie, Macorna (Golden Rivers)

The former VFL player has gone to another level this year with 35 goals to date and 10 mentions in the best.

Jordan Rosengren, Wedderburn (North Central)

A key pillar in both attack and defence for the Redbacks. He’s been in the best 12 out of 16 games and has also kicked 17 goals in his time in the forward line. Rosengren has also been pivotal at the back, stopping key North Central forwards.

Jacob Simpson, Lake Boga (Central Murray)

The Magpies ruckman is having another superb season after winning clubs best and fairest last year. He’s been in the best in all but two games.

Another vital midfielder for the Blues as they continue to dominate the Central Murray league.

SUNRAYSIA AND MILLEWA

Nestled in the sunshine, in and around Mildura, the football talent continues to grow.

Here’s a look at some of the best players from across the Sunraysia and Millewa competitions.

The former West Coast and GWS player has immediately found form in the Sunraysia league, being one of the league’s top goalscorers. He has kicked 43 goals from eight matches to help the team to fourth on the ladder.

The former best and fairest has had another strong season for Irymple. He’s kicked more than goal a game and been among the best in seven of 10 games.

What is it about Coleman’s and kicking goals? Coleman has been one of the best players for a struggling Imperials side this year, kicking 16 goals in seven games, including five goals against last year’s premiers in round three.

Gareth Collinson, Gol Gol (Millewa)

Limited to just four games last year, the Hawks forward has made the most of his opportunities this season with 39 goals from seven games to lead all comers.

In his first full season of the Kangaroos, Daly has shined from half back and the midfield. He’s been in the best eight games out of 11 and has kicked a goals every second game. Been vital in the Kangaroos push for a finals berth.

Ford has picked up from where he left off last season with another year of good footy. Has 23 goals so far.

Bailey Fotia, South Mildura (Sunraysia)

The new recruit has been one of the best for South Mildura this season. The former South Australian player has been among the best in seven out of 10 games, playing in the midfield for the Bulldogs.

Liam Garlick, Irymple (Sunraysia)

The small forward knows how to kick a goal. He’s averaged almost two goals a game so far this season and has been lively in the forward line for Irymple this season. Has 20 goals in 11 games.

Blaine Grills, Nangiloc (Millewa)

A move to a new cub has proven to have major dividends for Grills who has played a key role for Nangiloc.

It’s been an impressive debut season for Hura who crossed from the Sunraysia league. He has booted 16 goals and been named in the best seven times from 10 outings.

Tanan Hurley, Imperials (Sunraysia)

Hurley is having his best season in the Sunraysia league, being one of the best players in Imperials. He’s kicked six goals in 11 games and been among the best in more than half of the matches.

Isaiah Johnson, Robinvale Euston (Sunraysia)

Has been one of the stars to lead the Eagles to the top of the Sunraysia league. Johnson has averaged five goals a game and is currently leading the goalkicking in the competition with 55 goals from 11 games.

Clay Kerr, Gol Gol (Millewa)

Now with over 100 games for the club to his name, Kerr has cemented himself as one of the most consistent players in the competition.

Sam Kerridge, Mildura (Sunraysia)

On and off the field the former Carlton and Adelaide has been instrumental in guiding the Mildura Demons towards the top of the Sunraysia league. The midfielder has averaged two goals a game this season, kicking 20 goals in 10 games, to help the team to eight wins and two losses this season.

Josh Koster, South Mildura (Sunraysia)

The son of a gun has started to find form in the past couple of weeks and has been one of the best for South Mildura this year. The son of former Adelaide premiership player, Kym Koster, the former SANFL player has kicked 11 goals in 10 games and been among the best in six games. He currently leads the goalkicking for the club despite being a midfielder and has kicked eight goals in his past three matches.

Ricardo Liparota, Robinvale Euston (Sunraysia)

A talented young junior who is having his best year in seniors at the Eagles. He’s kicked 30 goals in 11 games, including a seven-goal haul against South Mildura this season. Been key to the Eagles rise up the ladder.

Korey Loechel, Merbein (Sunraysia)

The forward is currently third in the goalkicking this season and has been a real target for the Magpies. He has kicked 33 goals in eight games, including an eight and seven goal haul earlier this season.

Right in contention to potentially win the Sunraysia best and fairest. He’s kicked more than a goal a game and has been among the best in all but one of his 11 games. Sure to get plenty of votes when the counting is done later this year and has been vital to the Kangaroos maintaining a finals charge this season.

Anthony Matthews, Mildura (Sunraysia)

The leading goalkicker for the Demons and is on track for his largest haul of goals since 2017. Matthews has averaged almost three goals a game, kicking 26 goals in eight matches for the club.

Francesco Miceli, Cardross (Millewa)

Having a brilliant season across all areas of the game. He is the league’s second leading goalkicker with 35 majors and has been named in the best on 10 occasions.

Tyson Old, Red Cliffs (Sunraysia)

The former VFL and Northern league player has come back home in style to be one of the best for the Tigers this year. He’s averaged a goal a game in the midfield and helped Red Cliffs to challenge for the finals this year. He previously played for Hurstbridge in the Northern league.

Nick Pezzaniti, Irymple (Sunraysia)

The forward has averaged two goals a game for the reigning premiers this year and is on track to being the leading goalkicker for the club. On five occasions this season he has kicked three goals a game. Been instrumental in helping Irymple stay in the top three.

Jake Roberts, Bambill (Millewa)

Celebrated his 100th game for the club earlier this season. Roberts continues to be an important part of the Saints’ side.

Jason Robinson, Mildura (Sunraysia)

The former Bacchus Marsh and Camperdown player has been one of the best for the Demons this season as they surge up the ladder. The half back has found a major role down there and been among the best in seven on nine games he’s played.

Jeremy Rodi, Merbein (Sunraysia)

One of only three players, who have played more than six games, to be in the best players in all but one game. The former Sandhurst player has come back and been a key player in Merbein’s season.

Mitch Rogerson, Mildura (Sunraysia)

Been one of the best midfielders in the competition this season. The former VAFA and Essendon District player has been in the best six times out of the seven games he’s played and has helped the team to second in the Sunraysia league. Rogerson was also best on ground when the Demons became the first team to beat Robinvale Euston this season.

Vas Tuifao, Red Cliffs (Sunraysia)

Reliable week in and week out for the Tigers and has been a major presence in the forward line this season. He’s been in the best in seven out of 10 games and almost kicked a goal a game.

Andy Wall, Wentworth (Sunraysia)

Now a veteran at the Kangaroos but it hasn’t stopped him from being a pillar in defence. He’s been in the best player in eight of 11 games and last year finished second in the best and fairest.

Dallas Willsmore, Ouyen United (Sunraysia)

The former AFL player for Hawthorn might not be kicking the same amount of goals as last year, but the 28-year-old is still among the best for his home team. Last year he kicked 44 goals in 18 games and this year he’s kicked nine in 10 as his role has changed. But he’s still among the best, being in the best players in seven games out of 10.
