Super Saturday at Cora Lynn on March 1 has been “supersized” — and extended.
The West Gippsland club will host a bumper day of “wall-to-wall” football and netball practice matches.
Last year the Cobras pioneered a local footy equivalent to Gather Round, with clubs from country and metro leagues taking advantage of the availability of Cora Lynn’s spacious oval.
The Cobradome will again be a hive of activity next month, with games going throughout the day on Saturday, March 1.
In footy, Cora Lynn will face Langwarrin, while Pines will take on Officer, and Langwarrin’s U19s will have a hit-out.
Some footy games will consist of six “quarters’’.
It will be the start of a busy month of practice matches at Cora Lynn, with Southern league contenders Springvale Districts, MPFNL Division 2 grand finalists Chelsea and Jarrad Grant’s Frankston Bombers also venturing down to the town during the month of March.
With the new season around the corner, many local football clubs find it difficult to find grounds for practice matches, but Cora Lynn’s oval is available from the start of March.
“You can get access to grounds in our comp,” Cora Lynn coach Shaun Sparks said.
“There’s a lot of volunteers that run these grounds, it’s not council based. We’re in a pretty good spot when it comes to that.”
Cora Lynn president Rohan Marriott said there was “a real appetite” for footy at this time of the year and expects plenty of spectators to come along.
A full bar and canteen will operate.
Marriott said “Super Saturday’’ started last year as “just an idea’’.
“We floated it and it took off,” he said.
“We’ve had clubs contact us, we really haven’t had to promote it.”
