Coburg transfer to VAFA Premier Women’s competition

Coburg Football Club have joined a “strong and prestigious” competition in an “exciting” move for the club.

Coburg will be apart of the “more local” VAFA competition in 2023 after leaving the South Eastern Women’s Football League after two seasons.

The club will enter two women’s teams into the association which will include a side in the VAFA premier women’s competition.

The Lions were undefeated last season winning all 14 home and away games but falling short by a point to lose the Grand Final to Seaford.

VAFA CEO Jason Reddick said several clubs were consulted before Coburg were approved to join.

“Having conducted an extensive due diligence process including consultation with many of our clubs, we are delighted to welcome Coburg Football Club into our VAFA women’s competition,” Reddick said.

“A respected and historical club, we are confident that the Coburg teams will make a great contribution to our Association as we continue to grow the women’s competition which proudly stands as the largest in Australia.”

The Lions will play their homes games at Piranha Park in Coburg, adding to the strong presence of VAFA women’s football teams in the northern suburbs including Therry Penola, West Brunswick, Brunswick and North Brunswick.

Coburg CEO Sebastian Spagnuolo said the club were looking for to the opportunity.

“We are very excited to have our women’s teams joining such a strong and prestigious league that the VAFA is and has always been,” Spagnuolo said.

“As a club we have enjoyed two seasons in the South Eastern Women’s Football League and we are so appreciative of that league giving us the opportunity to compete in it, however this announcement is fantastic for our players and volunteers who will enjoy being part of a competition that is more local to Coburg.

“Our Coach Thomas Chitsos has already been explaining to our playing group the significance of this announcement and we as a club will enter the VAFA full of respect of the Association, clubs and the history of the competition.”
