Brad Nimmo and Nick Carnell will always have a special place reserved in the history books at Coburg Football Club.

Nimmo, a three-time premiership player, and Carnell, the modern face of the club, are rightfully proud of their place in Coburg’s history.

While appreciative of the past, the pair is also determined to ensure Coburg has a prosperous VFL future.

“That’s why I’m so passionate about getting that sustainable future,” Carnell said.

“It’s for maintaining the history of the place as well.”

Nimmo, one of the finest players to represent Coburg and captain of the club’s Team of the Century, has joined Carnell in supporting the Lions’ ‘Target 1000’ membership campaign.

“If you haven’t got enough finances you can’t get the right players, facilities and what not,” he said.

“It makes it hard. Any support that we can get is much appreciated.”

Nimmo, who featured in premierships in 1979, 1988 and 1989, remains a regular at Coburg City Oval as the proud club battles against AFL-aligned sides and VFL powerhouses such as Williamstown and Port Melbourne.

An uncompromising centre half back, Nimmo said the bonds forged at stand-alone VFL clubs were enduring.

“I had my 60th the other week and I invited all the boys from 88-89,” he said.

“I couldn’t squeeze in ‘79 because I already had too many there.

“That would have cost me a fortune.

“Most of them turned up and we always catch up at least once or twice a year. The goals get better and the marks get higher.”

Carnell featured during a period of transition for Coburg, from its alignment with Richmond to returning to its heritage as a stand-alone team.

Coburg City Oval is home for the tough on-baller, who led with distinction during a 175-game VFL career.

“It’s just so important for us to remain in the competition that we get that supporter base there and validate the reason that we are still going to be a part of the VFL,” Carnell said.

He believes a strong and passionate supporter base would encourage more players to sign with Coburg and result in swift on-field improvement.

“It gets harder and harder because the demands to compete against AFL players are huge, because of the time they are putting into their craft,” Carnell said.

“The guys are trying to create careers outside of that to build a healthy future for their families, so it’s a real balancing act.

“Hopefully with the right group on board this year, they can get three, four or five years together.

“That’s when you start to see some results.”

Moreland Leader has thrown its support behind the ‘Target 1000’ campaign during the past four weeks.
