Hepburn’s Sam Dunstan was already the premier forward in the Central Highlands Football League – but he’s taken his game to the next level.

The 23-year-old was in devastating form on Saturday as he booted an outstanding 20 goals to lead the ‘Burras to a 215-point thumping of Carngham Linton.

His side were able to secure their first win of the season after their opening round encounter against Daylesford was called off due to a serious injury to former Geelong player Josh Cowan.

Hepburn co-coach Jason Olver said Dunstan took most of the opportunities which he was presented with throughout the day.

“I think he ended up with 20.4,” he said.

“His opportunities came off the back of our dominance in the middle and the way our forward line worked together. No player was selfish and was doing everything they could to bring their teammates into the game.

“Sam took about 20 marks for the day which showed his hands were just as terrific.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better start to his season.”

This year is officially Dunstan’s second season with the Burras’ having joined the club in 2019.

He made an immediate impact kicking 108 goals for the year and finishing runner-up in the league best and fairest.

“Sam has been a terrific acquisition for us,” Olver said.

“For a young guy he has an outstanding presence inside forward 50.”

Despite all the individual accolades he received in year one, Dunstan will be desperate to help the side go one better in 2021 after losing the 2019 decider.

And Olver isn’t hiding from the fact his side wants to win a premiership.

“We’re off to a good start but a lot has to right between now and then,” Olver said.

“We’ve still got massive challenges ahead of us but hopefully we can give ourselves every opportunity to taste the ultimate success later in the year.”

A 2019 grand final rematch awaits Hepburn next Saturday as they welcome Waubra.
