JORDYN Allen says putting on a Collingwood jumper for the first time this afternoon was a magical feeling.
The Rye 18-year-old was taken by the Magpies with their first pick (No. 5 overall) in today’s AFL Women’s Draft, paving the way for her to showcase her immense talent at the highest level.
“It was a pretty special moment, not one I will forget soon,’’ Allen said after donning the famous black and white stripes.
“I’m overwhelmed, it was pretty crazy, yeah…I’m stoked obviously to end up at Collingwood, I couldn’t think of a better club to go to.’’
Collingwood coach Wayne Siekman presented Allen with her jumper and Magpies captain Steph Chiocci was quick to send her a message of congratulations. “That was pretty special,’’ Allen said.
Allen grew up — and still lives — a couple of kicks from the Rye football ground, where she’s spent countless hours honing her skills.
She had pace to burn when she was named in a Victorian 16 and under side at the age of 14 and has since developed a unique ability to read the play.
Allen was surrounded by family and friends, including her grandmother, at today’s draft and admitted she was still floating when she had a late lunch with them at 2.30pm.
She will start training with the Magpies in three weeks, after finishing VCE exams. She’s in Year 12 at Rosebud Secondary College.
Allen’s Casey Demons teammate Georgia Gourlay, from Frankston, was also picked up by Collingwood with selection 32. The 19-year-old who has undergone two knee reconstructions in recent years. Gourlay bounced back hard at the end of the 2018 VFL Women’s season and has plenty to offer as an AFL Women’s player.
And former Seaford player Selena Karlson joined the premiership-winning Western Bulldogs. The 20-year old is an aggressive and competitive key defender.
