AFL Outer-East: Seville ends its run of outs against Yarra Junction

After a string of lopsided results, Seville finally got the better of Yarra Junction for the first time in a while. But coach Kane Shore isn’t reading too much into the outcome of the AFL Outer-East clash.

Despite ending a run of outs against its fiercest rival for the Division 2 flag, coach Kane Shore said Seville isn’t reading anything into Saturday’s breakthrough win against Yarra Junction.

Seville’s 69-point win at home ended a string of heavy defeats at the hands of last season’s premier.

Though the Blues won last year’s minor premiership, finishing four games clear of third-placed Yarra Junction, the Eagles executed a perfect post-season campaign, blitzing Seville by 31 points in the second semi-final and 96 points in the season-decider.

And, when Yarra Junction won the round five clash between the two by 88 points at Yarra Junction back in May, it appeared a hoodoo was developing.

Shore, however, said fielding a greatly changed line-up this season meant Seville placed little weight on last year’s results.

And a long injury list for the first meeting between the two this year had cruelled the Blues’ chances.

“They’ve given us a couple of touch ups lately, haven’t they,” Shore said. “(But) it was good to get some blokes back. We’ve had a tough (injury) run early in the year. Everyone gets them. We’re a totally new side this season, we’ve got a lot of new players.”

And spending too long looking at last season through the rearview mirror only sets a team up for colliding into whatever obstacle lies ahead.

“You’d be crazy to look just at Yarra Junction,” Shore said. “There’s Kinglake as well and even Yarra Glen. And on any day, any of them can beat you.

“It was fantastic, it was a good win but in the scheme of things it was just four points, just another win and I’m sure we’ll be playing them again in finals when it will be a whole new game.”

Seville, Yarra Junction and Kinglake top the ladder (all on 48 points) with Yarra Glen three games further back in fourth.

Former Collingwood 200-gamer Josh Fraser kicked four goals in Seville’s win and Shore said, as he has done for a couple of seasons now, the former Magpies bigman would make himself available for his junior club when his duties as the Northern Blues VFL coach allowed.

“We’ll get him back in a few weeks time, when his schedule permits, and get him qualified for finals,” Shore said. “But it’s not just about Josh coming in and kicking five goals. He likes to come back to his junior club and have a kick at grassroots level. That’s just great (for the club) isn’t it.”

With four rounds of the regular season remaining, before Seville sets about atoning for last year’s disappointing finals campaign, Shore said the Blues are still a work in progress.

Though the steady return of injured players is helping, the footy Gods are a fickle bunch.

“At this stage, we’re slowly getting people back, but that can all change so quickly,” he said. “We just want everyone healthy and on the park.

“Timing is everything, timing is everything. And they don’t just hand flags out do they.”
