Woori Yallock made it two wins from two starts to open the Premier Division season when it scored a seven-point win over Cranbourne at the Woori Yallock Recreation Reserve on Saturday.

The Tigers’ win was bankrolled by an eight-goal second quarter that turned a 19-point deficit at quarter time to a 20-point lead at the half.

From there, Woori had just enough in the tank to win 14.9 (93) to 13.8 (86).

Alex Marsh fuelled the Woori Yallock win with five goals, all in the second quarter barrage, while Hayden Smith, Jordy Williams and Zach Monkhorst were named the three best.

Ryan Jones kicked three for Cranbourne and Shaun Marusic two while Anthony Vella, Michael Wenn and Jordan Bertrand did their best to get the Eagles over the line.

“We’d played all right in the first 15 minutes of the first quarter, we just couldn’t score, and then they kicked a couple against us,” Woori Yallock coach Bryan Cole said. “So it (the scoreline) probably looked a little worse than it really was.

“Then one bloke (Marsh) kicks five goals in a quarter. You don’t see that too often.”

Cole was full of praise for Marsh’s matchwinning burst noting the speedy 188cm (6’ 2”) forward had kicked some impressive goals in the rain.

“Hayden Smith was really good for us and Zac Monkhorst, he’s our only ruckman at the moment and he rucked tirelessly all day for us.”

After having the season -opening bye followed by the Easter break, Woori Yallock has played just twice this season and Cole said he was still coming to terms with the new opposition that’s come with the joining of the two leagues.

“I knew absolutely nothing about them, we just focused on what we can do,” he said. “We play that tight in-close game and they play on beautiful big grounds. When they get their running game going they were pretty attractive and hard to coach against.

“We (AFL Yarra Ranges clubs) will have to adapt to their grounds and they (SEFNL) have to adapt to ours.”

Meanwhile, Beaconsfield picked up its first win of the season when it scored a thumping 20.13 (133) to 3.5 (23) victory over Wandin at home at Holm Park on Saturday.

Nearly 10 goals up at halftime, the Eagles were never challenged on the way to a 110-point win.

Jamie Plumridge (five goals) and Matthew Johnson (four) led the scoring with Scott Meyer and Tylah Stokoe also good while Patrick Bruzzese, Rohan Heasley and Thomas Hinds did their best for the Bulldogs.

Narre Warren sits atop the ladder after a 20.22 (142) to 2.4 (16) win over Upwey Tecoma at Kalora Park after holding the Tigers goalless until the third quarter.

Aaron Wilson kicked five goals for Narre while Stewart Scanlon, Nathan Foote and Daniel Jackson had three apiece.

Olinda Ferny Creek held off a late Healesville surge to score its first win of the season in the battle of the Bloods at the Olinda Recreation Reserve on Saturday.

After leading by five goals at the final change, Olinda was held to a solitary behind in the last term as Healesville stormed home. But Olinda Ferny Creek held on to win 8.17 (65) to 7.13 (55).

Rodney Woodford kicked four of Healesville’s seven goals in a gallant effort.

Berwick had the week off for the bye.
