Liberal MP Nick Wakeling has come under fire after posting a joke about Premier Daniel Andrews on Facebook.
The post features a picture of the premier and invites the member for Ferntree Gully’s followers to describe his leadership with a movie title.
“I’ll go first: Titanic,” Mr Wakeling wrote.
The picture has gone viral since it was posted on Tuesday, attracting more than 800 comments and close to 300 emoji reactions.
Dozens of social media users accused Mr Wakeling of paying to “promote” the post, a function which enables content to be shared on newsfeeds of those who may not be already following the user.
“Really? You’re paying money to boost this post so it comes up in people’s newsfeed? It says more about you as a politician, and your personal immaturity, than anything else. You’ll never get my vote,” Lisa Alida replied.
“I’m sorry how old are you? Really? So childish. Go and do something about it if you don’t like it,” Elizabeth Wenzler said.
“Is that the episode of the Titanic where he stopped the spread of a deadly virus faster than any nation (or state) in the world … yeah that was a classic,” Luke Jones said.
But other followers took the post as a joke, with 110 ‘laugh’ reactions compared to 30 ‘angry’ responses.
“Nightmare on (Elm) Spring St,” Stephen Morris said.
“Let’s be honest, Groundhog Day … except he doesn’t learn each time we repeat the same mistakes then double down on them,” Keith Baker wrote.
Mr Wakeling did not respond to the Leader’s questions regarding allegations the post was promoted.
“Andrews isn’t the one paying the price for his failures in hotel quarantine and contact tracing – 250,000 Victorians who have lost their jobs are paying that price,” he said.
