V/Line train strikes cattle herd near Murchison East, passengers safe

More than 110 passengers had to exit a V/Line train mid-journey after it hit a herd of cattle near Murchison East on Thursday night.
The 4.07pm train from Southern Cross Station to Shepparton struck the herd about 7pm.
The train was moved to Toolamba where Victoria Police and SES crews assisted the 115 passengers on board to safely exit the train.
Passengers then boarded replacement coaches to continue their journey towards Shepparton.
A V/Line spokesman thanked passengers for their “understanding following service changes on the Shepparton Line due to an animal strike near Murchison East last night”.
A VICSES spokesman said Tatura Unit volunteers were called to respond to the incident. “Volunteers provided support to Victoria Police and train authorities to ensure passengers could disembark safely,” he said.
An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said paramedics were called to the scene but no emergency treatment or transport was provided.
A CFA spokesman said two units from Arcadia and Toolamba were also called to assist at the scene.
Friday morning’s 5.17am Shepparton to Melbourne service was replaced by road coaches to Seymour, and the 6.27am Shepparton to Melbourne service was also replaced by road coaches to Melbourne.
