A young woman has been sexually assaulted by a man pretending to be her Uber driver.

Police say the victim was leaving Chapel St when she was tricked into getting into a car she believed to be her Uber ride about 6am on September 1.

The 27-year-old woman was then attacked by the driver.

Marc Beyers, the owner of Revellers bar on Chapel St, said police alerted him to the sickening attack last week.

He took to Facebook to issue a warning to patrons who use rideshare apps for trips to and from the buzzing nightlife precinct.

Mr Beyers urged people to double check cars before getting in.

“He is still at large,” he posted

“Make sure you double-check the licence plate of your Uber car — every ride. Please be careful. This man is dangerous.”

“I hope he is caught as soon as possible,” Mr Beyers told the Leader.

“This type of behaviour in this area — which is usually safe — is definitely concerning.”

A Victoria Police spokesperson said an investigation was underway.

Uber has been contacted for comment, but a spokeswoman directed the Leader to a statement from the service’s head of operations Dom Taylor, who said a new app notification to remind customers to check their ride before they get into a car was launched earlier this year.

“You should never get in a car with a driver who claims to be with Uber but doesn’t match what is in your app,” Mr Taylor said.

“Every time you take a trip with Uber, you can make sure you’re getting into the right car with the right driver by matching the license plate, car make and model, and the driver photo with what’s provided in the app.”
