VCE 2020: How schools in Melbourne’s inner south ranked

Private schools have outclassed public schools in VCE results in Melbourne’s inner south. Here’s how all schools in the area performed.

Schools in Melbourne’s inner south are among the best in the state.

Data shows public and private schools in Port Phillip, Bayside and Glen Eira were among the best in the state for VCE results in 2020.

The schools have been ranked by their median study score — which is out of 50 and shows how the entire class performed in their final year.

The data shows private schools largely outclassed public schools in the area, with McKinnon Secondary College the only public school in the area to make the list of top 100 performers in the state.

Beth Rivkah Ladies College in St Kilda East was the top performer in the inner south with a median study score of 37.

The Orthodox Jewish school also had 30.2 per cent of students achieve study scores of 40 and above, earning it sixth spot in the list of top 100 performing schools across the state.

Haileybury Girls College was ranked eighth in the state with a median study score of 36 and 29.2 per cent of students achieving a study score of 40 or above.

Despite the tumultuous year of remote learning due to the deadly coronavirus pandemic, Haileybury recorded its second-best set of VCE results in the school’s history across all its campuses, including two perfect ATAR scores of 99.95.

Brighton Grammar had a median study score of 35, with six boys achieving the maximum study score of 50 across four subjects.

Leibler Yavneh College, which has campuses in Elsternwick and Caulfield North, recorded a median study score of 35, with 23.5 per cent of students achieving study scores of 40 or more.

Firbank Grammar notched up its best results eight years from its largest ever VCE cohort, with almost half the year achieving ATAR scores of 90 or above.

The median study score was 35, with five students achieving a 50 in various subjects.

Vivian Zhou and Yi (Jennifer) Liu were named joint duxes with ATARs of 99.70.

Ormond’s Kilvington Grammar was ranked 35th according to median study score (35), with 20.2 per cent of students notching up study scores of 40 or more, including two perfect study scores of 50 in psychology and biology.

Nearly 10 per cent of Kilvington students were ranked in the top 2 per cent of the state with ATARs of 98 or more.

Harry Xi was named dux with an ATAR of 99.35.

Caulfield Grammar principal Ashleigh Martin praised the “outstanding” academic achievements of the class of 2020 during a tough year.

The St Kilda East campus achieved a median study score of 35, with 20.1 per cent of students achieving a study score of 40 or above.

The school’s dux, Zijin Xu, achieved an ATAR of 99.95, the highest score possible.

And 18 students achieved a maximum study score of 50 in 15 different subjects.

“The overall academic achievement of our VCE students is outstanding. We are immensely proud,” Mr Martin said.

Shelford Girls’ Grammar and Mentone Girls’ Grammar round out the top 10 performers in the inner south.

Meanwhile, McKinnon Secondary College, one of the state’s most popular public schools, was the only public school in the inner south to earn a spot among the top 100 in the state.

The highly sought after school, which recently announced zoning changes, was ranked 62nd in the state with a median study score of 33 and 17.2 per cent of students achieving study scores of 40 or more, including nine perfect study scores.

The school’s joint duxes achieved an ATAR of 99.90.
