German supermarket giant Kaufland has launched a $24 million bid to open in Cheltenham.
Plans lodged with Bayside Council a week ago show the retail heavyweight hopes to build a store in Bay Rd — next door to Aldi.
Kaufland superstores — described as a cross between Aldi and Costco — have already been approved for Dandenong, Chirnside Park, Epping, Oakleigh South and Coolaroo.
Another nine applications have been submitted to open stores in the western and eastern parts of the state.
Pennydale Resident Action Group president Derek Screen told the Leader most people had been excited about the potential for a Kaufland to open at 270-276 Bay Rd.
“People I’ve spoken to have been like ‘bring it on!’, and really looking forward to having it here,” he said.

“The main concern is traffic, but that’s a standard concern with new developments these days.”
Kaufland is part of the Schwarz Group, the fourth-biggest retailer in the world.
Stores generally span 20,000sq m — more than five times larger than the average Coles or Woolworths — and sell 60,000 goods, ranging from cheese slices to car tyres, at discount prices.
Earlier this year furious residents slammed a proposal to open a Kaufland in Mornington amid concerns for traffic safety issues and impact on nearby businesses.
Kaufland has been contacted for comment.
