German supermarket interloper Kaufland has lifted the lid on what its new stores will look like as it ramps up its ambitions for Victoria.
The retail heavyweight this morning said it had received approval to open two new stores in Oakleigh South and Coolaroo in Melbourne.
It has also applied to open another nine stores in the western and eastern areas of the state.
Kaufland has already received approval to open three stores in Dandenong, Epping and Chirnside Park and a distribution centre in Mickleham.
It has based its headquarters in Melbourne and plans to spend $500 million setting up its Victorian business.
The nine new sites it is seeking permission for will be reviewed by an independent panel, include both metropolitan and regional cities.
Kaufland Australia managing director Julia Kern said construction work on its first two Australian test stores, which includes its Dandenong location, began last week.
“With five approved stores, as well as the additional nine sites under review, we are
committed to our long term, sustainable growth across Victoria,” she said this morning.
“We look forward to creating thousands of jobs and creating opportunities for local businesses.”
Kaufland is part of the Schwarz Group, the fourth-biggest retailer in the world.
Its shopping experience has been described as a mix between Aldi and Costco.
