After 80 years of silence, a hollow and voiceless clock tower on St Kilda Foreshore will ring out later this year when a digital bell chime is installed.
The iconic 1930s esplanade clock will be revamped by Port Phillip Council during a 12-month centenary events program commemorating St Kilda visionary architect Carlo Catani.
The Catani Clock was built more than a decade after his death to complete his plans of a cosmopolitan Mediterranean-style entertainment and promenading parkscape for St Kilda Foreshore.

A design competition was held and architect Norman Shefferle’s clock tower won but was missing a clock’s most important feature, a bell.
The new digital chime installation will set council back $24, 500.
Questions still remain about the sound, frequency and timing of the chimes.
Those most likely to hear the chimes are those of Acland, Fitzroy and surrounding streets.
Community consultation will be undertaken with these residents as well as Esplanade Market traders, the St Kilda Historical Society and St Kilda RSL.
