Albert Park state Labor MP Martin Foley said the cameras — slated for Acland, Barkly and Carlisle streets, Shakespeare Grove and the Esplanade — would help “increase community safety, security and confidence in public places”.

“The latest data from the independent Crime Statistics Agency shows the crime rate in St Kilda continues to fall, but we know there is still more work to be done,” he said.

“(The cameras) will give police the tools they need to do their jobs and we look forward to the council swiftly progressing this next CCTV project.”

Port Phillip Inspector Jason Kelly said there had been positive results from the Fitzroy St cameras, including several arrests.

The seven cameras — located between the Upper Esplanade and Grey St/Canterbury Rd — were switched on almost two years ago and are live streamed to the St Kilda police station and monitored at peak activity times, including evenings and weekends.

“Victoria Police welcomes any infrastructure investment that enhances safety, both perceptions and outcome-based through the gathering of evidence for prosecution,” he said.

Carlisle St has long been dogged by violence and anti-social behaviour, with residents and traders to lobbying for a daytime booze ban and CCTV cameras.

An alcohol ban has been in place for about a year, with police saying it has worked to quell some of the issues.

Details such as the number and location of the new cameras have not yet been determined.
