A “huge” illegal beach party at the trouble-plagued St Kilda foreshore encouraging partygoers to bring along drugs and booze is being promoted on social media.
The event planned for December 22, which has been shared dozens of times on Instagram in recent days, has been touted by organisers as a “huge beach party”, encouraging them to “BYO Dugu (cannabis), liquor and food”.
The Instagram page promoting the event has already racked up more than 500 followers, since organisers began posting three days ago.
Dozens of youths have commented on the Instagram post saying they will “refuse to wear masks”, while another said “there’s going to be a brawl, I’m calling it now”.
It comes after a string of illegal parties in recent weeks after footage emerged of wild partygoers lighting flares on Thursday as thousands flocked to the foreshore for music and dancing.
Last week, hundreds of people, not wearing masks or social distancing, descended on St Kilda beach last week watched by a heavy police presence.
On Friday, the police also cracked down on drunken beachgoers at Seaford beach.
It’s believed the groups catch public transport from suburbs including Cranbourne and Dandenong before loading up on alcohol and spilling out onto the foreshore.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman said police were aware of a social media post promoting a planned party at St Kilda beach on December 22.
“Police will not tolerate any criminal or disruptive behaviour that may have a negative impact on the rest of the community,” the spokeswoman said.
“As the weather starts to warm up, police will have a highly visible presence right across Port Phillip Bay as well as other beach areas and parklands as part of Operation Summersafe which is our yearly summer policing response.”
She said police understood people were keen to get outside and enjoy the sunshine over the coming days but asked for it to be done safely.
“Local police will be well supported by state-based resources such as the Mounted Branch, Public Order Response Team and Water Police to detect and deter any offending.
“Members of the public should expect to see police proactively patrolling busy locations such as beaches, shopping and entertainment precincts and nearby public transport hubs.”
Police said anyone planning on heading out and about must adhere to the latest Chief Health Officer directions and police will continue to enforce these rules.
