A Victorian Premier cricketer collapsed on the pitch and was taken to hospital in an incident his coach described as “very scary’’.

Kingston Hawthorn batsman Romain Grenville fell to the ground in front of the umpire after completing a run in the match against Footscray at Walter Galt Reserve in Parkdale on Saturday.

“Call an ambulance!’’ Hawks coach Peter Marshall is heard saying on video footage of the game.

The incident happened in the 16th over of the match, after Grenville hit Bulldogs spinner Siddhesh Dixit through mid-off for a single.

When he reached the nonstriker’s end he raised his left hand as if asking for help, then collapsed face-first on the pitch.

The umpire immediately waved his arms for assistance.

A Footscray player turned him on his side but Grenville came to and tried to get to his feet. Other players placed him on his back, removing his pads and gloves.

After a few minutes he got to his feet and slowly walked from the ground with Marshall at his side.

The coach said he believed a family member took Grenville to hospital.

Play was held up for about 10 minutes, Marshall said.

Grenville had made eight off 27 balls.

“It wasn’t a pretty sight,’’ Marshall.

“He finished the run and then he started to stagger and his knees buckled and he face-planted on to the ground.

“If he hadn’t had his helmet on, he would have broken his nose or lose some teeth, he hit the ground that hard.

“He said later everything slowed down and he might have an underlying problem. Thankfully he came to and was talking OK and obviously he’s in our thoughts.

“But it was very scary, more so because he’s ripping fit. For a moment it caught my breath. I was very, very concerned.’’

Hawks fast bowler Zack Richardson is a medical student and helped Grenville.

Marshall said this morning Grenville was having medical tests and was in good spirits.

He said many people had contacted the club to offer their best wishes to Grenville.

The 33-year-old is a much-travelled player in Premier and Sub-District cricket and joined the Hawks last season after previous stints at Frankston-Peninsula and North Melbourne.

He is the son of former West Indian first-class cricketer Mark Grenville.
