K Williamson is a batsman of international repute.

Another K Williamson is quickly making his name in Victorian Premier Cricket.

That’s Melbourne’s new leg-spinner Kyle Williamson, a 29-year-old South African who joined the Demons after Christmas.

In only his second match in the First XI he grabbed five wickets in each innings to propel Melbourne to an outright victory over Frankston Peninsula at Jubilee Park on Saturday.

His match haul was 10-47, made up of figures of 5-24 off 16.5 overs and 5-23 off 22.

On day one Melbourne had whipped out the Heat for 99 in 50.5 overs and sped to 2-173 off 44 overs on the shoulders of Blake Thomson’s 101 not out.

The Demons declared overnight and again chewed through the Frankston Peninsula, dismissing the hosts for 101 in 64 overs.

Williamson was again the Heat’s chief tormentor, although he couldn’t dismiss opener Nick Mann, who had the distinction of carrying his bat.

In a determined 246-minute stay, Mann was 55 not out, off 198 balls.

Melbourne hit 1-28 off 4.1 overs to lock up the 10 points and go to third on the ladder.

The Demons will play second-placed Footscray in the quarter-finals.

“A great outcome. He bowled beautifully,’’ Melbourne coach Adam Dale said of Williamson.

“He played first-class cricket in South Africa, so he had strong credentials. But he’s been able to fit in very quickly and Cameron (Cameron White) has captained the team really well.

“The guy’s got terrific talent. He can bowl. A few people will have a look at him.’’

Dale said Melbourne set out to finish in the top-four and was pleased to do so.

“But there’s still a lot of hard work ahead of us, a lot of cricket to be played,’’ the former Australian swing bowler said.

“It’s an old cliche but it really is one step at a time.

“Footscray is a really good team, and played really well against us through the year. It will be a hard, tough battle, and we’ll have to prepare really well and give it our best go.’’
