Regis Aged Care Brighton: Four more residents die, taking virus toll to seven

The death toll at a Brighton aged care home continues to rise, as the number of active cases in Bayside grows to 110.

A coronavirus outbreak at Regis Aged Care Brighton has claimed another four lives, bringing the total of deaths at the centre to seven.

Managing Director and chief executive officer Linda Mellors confirmed that a total of 61 people had been infected with the virus as a result of the outbreak.

The number includes 24 residents, two respite residents who have returned to their family home, 36 staff and one family member, Ms Mellors said.

“We have four residents being cared for in hospital due to their clinical needs,” she said.

“Of the residents who have previously tested positive for COVID-19 and remain in the home, nine have no symptoms and are feeling well. We have two residents in the home who are unwell and their families are updated regularly on their clinical condition.”

The last positive COVID-19 test linked to Regis Brighton was recorded on August 2.

“While the last series of test results were all negative, it is vital that we maintain focus to eliminate the virus from our Home completely,” Ms Mellors said.

“We have an additional clinical resource on site, in the Manor Wing, to help support with infection control and prevention measures.”

The latest figured from the Department of Health and Human Services revealed another dark day for Victoria as families mourned 19 new deaths since Monday.

A total of 14 of the 19 deaths were linked to known outbreaks in aged care facilities.

The overall deaths from coronavirus in Victoria stand at 246.

Monday’s recorded deaths included one woman in her 50s, one man in his 70s, six women and four men in their 80s and four women and three men in their 90s.

There were 110 active cases recorded in Bayside on since Monday, an increase of 10 since Thursday, August 6.

Another aged care home – Menarock Life (Rosehill) – has also been hit with an outbreak that is believed to be linked to 51 active cases.

The Highett home was slapped with an official warning from the Commonwealth after it was found to pose immediate and severe risks to its residents.

Menarock Life (Rosehill) was issued a Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission Notice to Agree on Tuesday for endangering the health, safety and wellbeing of care residents.

The 60-bed nursing home was audited by federal authorities amid surging cases across the city. Bayside that saw active cases soar from 46 to 93 in just 48 hours from Monday, August 3.
