A Cheltenham health store is counting the cash after an extraordinary increase in customers during the coronavirus pandemic.

Online gut health brand Nourishme Organics, based in Keys Rd, has enjoyed a 42 per cent increase in website traffic compared to the same time last year — and its DIY sourdough kit has been the most popular item.

Kriben Govender, a food scientist and registered nutritionist, is the founder of Nourishme Organics and said all of the store’s various sourdough-making products had seen a sales increase of 2000 per cent from February to April.

”Sourdough was the most searched term on our website in April, and four months’ worth of our DIY sourdough kits sold out in just four weeks,” Mr Govender said.

“We have seen a 42 per cent increase in website traffic compared to this time last year as people become more accustomed to the importance of gut health and its impact on our immune system and overall health.”

While the DIY sourdough kit is the hero of the Nourishme Organics stable, its kombucha kit sales are up 22 per cent too.

“Fermented foods are rich in vitamins, nutrients, prebiotics and probiotics which all promote a healthy and happy gut, and homemade versions retain significantly more of these health benefits than any store-bought versions,” Mr Govender said.

“With 80% of our immune system located in the gut, fermented foods are also the perfect immune booster as we come into the winter flu season.”

Mr Govender started the Nourishme Organics brand eight years ago, after struggling with mental health issues.

“I was crippled with anxiety and depression, I was overweight and lacking energy and vibrancy,” he said.

“My psychiatrist told me that antidepressants were my only treatment option, but as a food scientist I started to research alternatives.

“I discovered the incredible impact of gut health on our overall health and the magic of fermented foods which completely transformed my life.”

Nourishme Organics is Australia’s premier online gut health store and is run by Mr Govender and his wife, with their shopfront in Keys Rd, Cheltenham.
