An alleged drug dealer and “hippy vegan” has been charged after a police raid at a South Melbourne home.

Daniel Liss appeared in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday after he was charged with drug trafficking, cultivation, possession and possessing cash suspected of being proceeds of crime.

The 47-year-old was charged last year following a police raid at a South Melbourne property on August 25.

Police allegedly located jars and zip lock bags filled with ketamine, MDMA, dried mushrooms and cannabis at the property.

More than $11,000 cash and multiple phones containing explicit trafficking related messages were also allegedly found.

The court heard his co-accused, a woman known to him, was sentenced on possession charges.

His lawyer Michael Pena-Rees said when he first met his client he presented as a “hippy vegan” who had a prejudiced childhood and was largely introduced to drugs for medicinal purposes.

Mr Pena-Rees said his client worked at a Footscray cafe and had struggled with drug use and was hospitalised after suffering multiple drug-induced psychoses.

The matter was adjourned for a further mention on October 12.
