Hotel Brighton mural celebrates launch of Saints AFLW team

A Brighton pub has been splashed with a powerful red, white and black message to fierce female footballers ahead of the Saints team joining the AFLW competition.

A powerful mural honouring female St Kilda footballers has been revealed in Brighton.

The painting on the side of Hotel Brighton aims to send a powerful message to the Saints’ inaugural AFLW team — and future generations of female footy fanatics.

Artist Ellen Porteus, whose “playful but ballsy” work has been featured by Adidas, Apple and Nike, designed the bold “Let’s Own It” statement piece for the Bay St watering hole.

“A big passion for me is female empowerment,” she said.

“That is something that I deal with a lot in my personal work so when that can transfer over into my commercial paid work it is something that is very rewarding.”

Porteus said she loved the idea that young girls might see the mural and “feel represented”.

The mural marks a new era for the Saints and invites the community to be part of history when the team joins the AFLW competition in 2020.
