Health inspectors shut down Akiya Japanese Restaurant for dodgy food practices
A POPULAR Japanese restaurant in Brighton has been shut down after health officers conducted a routine inspection and labelled it an “immediate risk to public health”.

HEALTH inspectors have ordered a popular Bayside restaurant to close its doors indefinitely following dodgy food practices.
Brighton’s Akiya Japanese Restaurant was yesterday closed by Bayside Council Environmental Health officers conducting a routine inspection of the premises.
Inspectors labelled the popular restaurant as an “immediate risk to public health” and ordered it to close immediately.
For legal reasons the council could not elaborate on exactly why Akiya was instructed to close.

However, the offence was serious enough to make the Church St eatery the first Bayside business to be shut on the spot in the past five years.
The notice on the front door of the restaurant states the premises is in an “unclean or unsanitary condition or in a state of disrepair, that food being prepared, sold or otherwise handled at the premises is unsafe or unsuitable and food is prepared, sold or otherwise handled in a manner that makes it likely the food is unsafe or unsuitable”.
City planning and community services director Hamish Reid said the council placed a “high importance” on ensuring food was safely delivered to the public.
“Bayside City Council requires local food businesses to meet strict food safety standards,” he said.
“We take these matters extremely seriously and we will continue to take action against any businesses which fail to meet the food safety standards as required by law.
“This business is prohibited from operating in the preparation and sale of food until it complies with the matters set out in their notice.”
Akiya, which specialises in traditional Japanese cuisine such as sushi, sashimi (raw fish) and Teriyaki chicken, is popular with many Melburnians who visit the restaurant each year.
Akiya management could not be reached for comment.
