SOME of the most poignant sounds to be heard at this year’s Bayside Anzac centenary commemoration will be the haunting notes of Hampton trumpeter Lachie Briggs.
The 12-year-old has been hard at work practising to perform the Last Post at the Green Point ceremony on April 25.
This year Hampton and Beaumaris RSLs, in conjunction with Bayside Council, are hosting a joint ceremony at the Brighton memorial.
Lachie has loved the brass instrument since first encountering it when he was aged eight.
The Brighton grammar student said when he was at Hampton Primary School there was a great music program.
“I really enjoyed playing the trumpet, and I practised and got better at it,” Lachie said.
He was invited to play in front of about 1000 people at the Hampton RSL sub-branch’s dawn service last year, and said although he had performed before big crowds before, the centenary event would be special.
“It is a very important day, as Anzac means so much to me as we need to honour the soldiers,” he said.
“I’m a bit nervous, I always get butterflies, but there is a sense of excitement, too, as there is a great honour being part of it.”
The service will be held at Green Point War Memorial, Brighton Beach, starting at 5.30am.
After the dawn service, a gunfire breakfast will be served at the Hampton RSL sub-branch’s Holyrood St club, with the annual two-up event in the afternoon.
