Drunk thug threw wine bottle at girlfriend’s face, punched, abused and threatened to kill her

A Cranbourne dad who smashed a bottle on his girlfriend’s face also punched her three times to the head after tackling her to the ground. He has been warned he faces possible jail for the “disgraceful” behaviour.

An alcoholic who punched and threatened his girlfriend and threw a wine bottle that smashed in her face has been bailed to undergo counselling.

Charles Chol has been told by a magistrate he faces time behind bars unless he changes his violent and “disgraceful” attitude and gets mental health and alcohol treatment.

The 36-year-old from Cranbourne inflicted four months of abuse on his now former partner and the mother of his young child during a 15-month relationship.

As well as hurling the wine bottle at her head he also crash-tackled her to the ground, stole her mobile phone and punched her three times in the face.

He also said “if he had a gun he would shoot her” and called her a “slut” who he said “should kill herself”.

He pleaded guilty to charges including unlawful assault, criminal damage and court order breaches at Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The court heard his offending began on January 23 this year when Chol launched into an alcohol-fuelled rant at the woman.

Police were called but he had already left her Mentone address, however he came back the next day and broke in through a back door.

He then picked up a wine bottle and threw it, which hit her squarely in the face and smashed on impact, but luckily she was not injured.

Chol was arrested, and while he admitted arguing with the woman, he denied throwing the bottle or assaulting her.

In March he abused her again, calling her names, tackling her to the ground and stealing her phone before telling her to kill herself, saying if he had a gun he would shoot her.

And on two more occasions, in January and May this year, he was caught at her home against court orders.

In court his defence lawyer said there was “an element of alcohol toxicity” in all the incidents and Chol “understands he must behave in an appropriate manner”.

She said he was remorseful and a sentence deferral to allow time for him to engage with cultural-aligned alcohol and mental health programs would be beneficial.

Chol has been in custody since he was arrested on May 22 and has served 20 days on remand.

Magistrate Dr Michael King told Chol that time behind bars was “a taste of what to expect” if he continued on the same path.

“You need to change your attitude; it is disgraceful,” Dr King said.

“Family violence can cause serious and significant longstanding adverse psychological and emotional effects on victims.

“You have a duty not to act in that way, not to turn to abuse, to violent conduct that causes harm to those you love.”

Dr King bailed Chol to his Cranbourne home, deferring sentence and strongly advising him he should use the time for alcohol and mental health counselling.

He said he would then consider whether or not to jail him, and if he did, for how long.

Chol will next appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on August 14.
