Drunk driver found asleep in car boozy night with workmates at surgery farewell

A man has been found asleep in the driver’s seat of his car with the engine running and a beer bottle between his legs — in Aspendale train station’s carpark at 5.30pm. Then he told police the reason why he had given it a “nudge”.

A tired, drunk driver found asleep at the wheel with a bottle of beer between his legs had been on a ‘surgery farewell’ booze bender with his workmates, a court has heard.

Brian Trevor Williams pleaded guilty at Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court last week to blowing almost three times over the legal limit.

The court heard police found the Somerville man asleep in the driver’s seat of his car parked in Station St, Aspendale about 5.30pm on November 23 last year.

The engine was running and there was a beer bottle between his legs.

He tested positive for alcohol and back at Moorabbin police station blew .145, losing his licence on the spot and getting his car impounded.

Williams told officers he had had three or four Carlton full strength beers after work that day and “did give it a nudge” the night before, downing eight or nine beers to ‘celebrate’ leaving his Cheltenham workplace to have serious bowel surgery.

He said he was parked at the station as he was having a hypoglycaemic episode and wanted to rest.

In court, his defence lawyer said Williams had been having a drink with work colleagues to wish him well prior to his surgery.

He said he was now in a dire financial situation and incapable of working.

Williams also has two priors for drink-driving, one in 1990 and another in 2014.

Magistrate Anne Goldsbrough said it seemed he had had longstanding challenges with alcohol.

Ms Goldsbrough said he should concentrate on his health issues and advised he received treatment for his alcohol concerns.

Williams was convicted and fined $750, and was disqualified from driving for 28 months.
