A boozing mattress worker has managed to avoid a jail bed despite crashing his car in Melbourne’s south while four times over the blood alcohol limit.

A mattress worker with a love of liquor has managed to avoid a jail bed despite crashing his car while four times over the blood alcohol limit.

Chrisanthos Christakis represented himself in Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court yesterday for sentencing after earlier pleading guilty to driving under the influence, failing to stop after an accident and breaching a driving licence condition.

The court heard Christakis was driving along Hanover St in Oakleigh when he crashed his car into the back of a parked car about 5.30pm on November 5 last year.

After both drivers got out to exchange details, Christakis returned abruptly to his car and drove off.

The victim had smelt alcohol on Christakis’ breath and called police, who tracked him down through his rego.

At 6.45pm he blew .208 and told officers he had drunk three schooners before driving and another six bottles of beer when he got back home.

Christakis said he was moving his car to avoid a parking ticket when the crash happened and had left the scene because he didn’t have insurance.

The court heard he was caught drink-driving in 2016, recording .182, and had a zero condition on his licence when he got it back last year.

Magistrate Ian McGrane said Christakis was a “danger to people on the road”.

Christakis was given an 18-month community corrections order and must do 100 hours of unpaid work, undergo alcohol counselling and pay a $1000 bond.

He must also do a road safety awareness program and he had his licence disqualified for 30 months, backdated to last November.
