Unlicensed driver earns night in Melbourne cells for defying police call to not drive again

An ice addict caught driving an unregistered car with no number plates in Seaford was told not to get behind the wheel again. He was told not to get back behind the wheel but instead whacked on false plates and tried his luck again.

An unlicensed driver caught by cops in an unregistered car with no plates was nabbed behind the wheel again just a few hours later.

Frankston Magistrates’ Court heard Christopher Roberts, 35, was seen by police pulling into a Seaford service station to get petrol about 11am on April 28.

His car stood out because it had no plates, and a check revealed the registration had expired in January.

Roberts was also unlicensed, having lost his right to drive in October last year.

Arresting officers specifically told him not to get behind the wheel again but another police patrol saw him driving the same car six hours later, with false plates attached, on Beach Rd in Frankston.

When he was pulled over Roberts was nervous and evasive, so officers searched him and found a small bag of ice in his wallet.

He was then given the night in the cells to reflect upon his motoring madness.

His defence lawyer said the former real estate agent — who pleaded guilty from the dock to driving and drug charges — had got “a wake-up call” from having to spend a night in custody.

She said the now-unemployed disability pensioner had a drug habit and mental health issues.

Magistrate Stephen Lee said Roberts had several pages of priors, mainly for drug crimes, and was on a slippery slope towards spending a lot of time in jail.

“You were told not to drive, you just ignored police advice to you,” Mr Lee said.

“Then you got false plates and went and drove anyway, that is an aggravating feature.”

Roberts was convicted and fined $1200, and released.
