IN September 2001, St Kilda local Mike Rolls had the world at his feet. He was in high spirits, on his way to an annual football trip.
But little did he know he would be struck with meningococcal septicaemia towards the end of his trip, leaving him unconscious for five weeks. Doctors gave him a five per cent survival rate.
Mr Rolls said the infection spread throughout his body, leading to the amputation of both of his legs below the knee, along with two fingers on his right hand.
“I defied all odds and survived,” Mr Rolls said. “I have two bionic legs and use my experience as a motivational speaker to inspire people going through adolescence who are making life-changing decisions,” he said.
Mr Rolls will be speaking at Outspoken, a free public event on Tuesday, November 8, held by social enterprise Blank Canvas.
Blank Canvas founder Doug Hartman said “the evening will be aimed at telling extraordinary stories to inspire people from all walks of life”.
Outspoken will be held at 2/82 Acland St, St Kilda on November 8, at 6pm. Bookings: doug@stkildahub.com.au
