A litter-loving kitten is counting its nine lives after it was saved from a bin in a delicate rescue operation in Melbourne’s southeast.
The marmalade cat, who is yet to be named, found itself wedged in a small hole at the bottom of a skip bin at a factory on Keys Rd Cheltenham about 11.30am yesterday.
Luckily someone heard the plaintive meows and called for help.
Melbourne Fire Brigade firefighters from Highett fire station placed a blanket over the confused kitty’s head and carefully used a grinder and battery-operated spreading tool to cut open the hole and let it free.
“After 45 minutes of delicate work, the cat was successfully released,” an MFB spokeswoman said.
“The cat was placed in their care of animal welfare specialists who were at the scene.”
It is unknown if the cat, which was not wearing a collar, was a stray or has an owner.
MFB crews are no strangers to rescuing our furry friends, with firefighters in North Melbourne freeing cat Puss who got stuck in a gap in a brick wall while chasing a rat in March.
They used special equipment to carefully cut away part of the wall to free the tired and hungry feline.
