THE LAST garbage truck has spilt its load at the Clayton South regional landfill and the controversial site is now closed.
Local businesses and interest groups hope it will bring to an end to offensive smells that have plagued the local community for years.
The closure on January 29, six months earlier than first flagged, comes after a 366-hectare chunk of Kingston’s green wedge was rezoned last year to end landfill in the area.
The operators of the landfill, made up of five municipal councils and headed by Boroondara, were fined more than $7500 for breaching landfill gas levels last year. The group was also issued with three pollution abatement notices in that time.
Peter Fountas, who owns two warehouses nearby, urged those responsible for the tip to begin capping immediately.
The director of Virtus Property Group said the area was overrun by seagulls using the tip as a food source.
“I lost one tenant in December last year as a result of the seagulls. They couldn’t have meetings because of the seagulls; their cars were covered in bird droppings.”
Mr Fountas said up to 1000 birds rested on the roof of his Graham Rd warehouse each day.
Defenders of the South East Green Wedge secretary Barry Ross welcomed the move.
“We are hopefully that the whole area (around the Clayton South landfill) is rejuvenated in the long term with a chain of parks.”
“We’ve been pretty concerned about the odours that have been coming from the site over the years.”
The Carroll Road tip in Clarinda closed it gates last year and the Fraser Road transfer station is expected to close in 2017.
