One of Melbourne’s most loved moviehouses has opened a live music and comedy space, and is set to launch summer rooftop screenings.

Classic Cinemas has opened a new live music and comedy space inside its Elsternwick venue — with a rooftop cinema also on its way.

Opened on Saturday, Classic Southside is a new space for music, film, talks, comedy, and other performance, while also exhibiting southside-based artists’ work closer to home.

They’ll host diverse shows on Friday and Saturday nights, a VHS screen night on Mondays with edgy cult films, a ‘talkbox’ event on Tuesdays combining spoken word and comedy and an indie offering on Thursdays.

A rooftop cinema at the Gordon St site, catering for up to 70 guests, has also been approved and will open in summer 2019/20 after being approved by Glen Eira Council earlier this year.

The new additions are modelled off Lido Cinema in Hawthorn, also owned by the same family.

Classic Cinemas owner and creative director Eddie Tamir said it was all about creating compelling experiences for people and providing “some surprise and circus”.

“Cinemas are fantastic as a general experience and we’re looking to broaden out our definition of entertainment,” Mr Tamir said.

“There isn’t that many quality venues for this southside, so we think there’s a gap for a smaller intimate room with a capacity up to 80 people.”

Mr Tamir said there’d been some challenges with the proliferation of Netflix and home viewing, but cinemas still prevailed.

“The shared experience is compelling and has managed to keep the cinema business thriving despite the start of TV, streaming, stealing, netflixing,” he said.

“Saying that, expanding what our cinema is offering competes with not just staying at home but other entertainment in general.”
