MOVIEGOERS who like outdoor flicks could have another option next summer, after Classic Cinemas applied to build a new rooftop screen at the Elsternwick site.
An application has been lodged for a rooftop cinema at the Gordon St site, catering for up to 70 guests.
If approved next Thursday, the cinema would be modelled off Lido Cinema’s Lido on the Roof in Hawthorn, also owned by the same family.
The application has so far received four objections, concerning noise, disturbance and the impact on car parking in the area.

But the document submitted to the council by Highburn Pty Ltd states the cinema screen will be located on the southeastern part of the site, “well removed from the nearest residential property at 15 Gordon St”.
An acoustic assessment by Arup also states there will be “no unreasonable noise impacts from the proposal”.
The application also notes the approved patron number will remain the same at the cinema despite the added space, and while the site is located within a heritage overlay, works are only slated for the contemporary part of the building.
“The proposed works represent a high quality and well resolved outcome for the site,” it reads.
“The introduction of a rooftop cinema to the Elsternwick Activity Centre will result in a new entertainment option for residents, thus improving the amenity of the area.”
Glen Eira planning and place director Ron Torres said the council was expected to decide on the application next Thursday.
Classic Cinema declined to comment.
