Carrum Downs Secondary College student, 13, bashed in random attack

A Carrum Downs Year 7 student is too scared to leave her house after she was hit in the head and verbally abused while walking to school. She says the man, who “reeked” of beer and cigarettes, then made a speedy getaway.

A young teenage girl was bashed across the head and verbally abused by a man as she walked to school yesterday.

The Carrum Downs 13-year-old has been left feeling too “petrified” to go outside since the assault, her mum has told the Leader.

Mother-of-two Mel, who did not want to use her last name, said her daughter refused to get out of bed after she was hit and called a “f****** c***” by an unidentified man on McCormicks Rd.

The Year 7 student was on her usual walk to Carrum Downs Secondary College near Rowellyn Ave about 8.30am when she felt a man approach her from behind.

“He hit her across the back of the head told her to ‘go die you “f****** c***’,” Mel said.

“I can’t believe it. Who does that to a young girl on her way to school?”

Mel said her daughter, who suffered a bruised head, screamed and ran home less than 500m from where she was struck.

The girl said the man jumped into the passenger seat of a nearby car, which had a smashed back window. She believed it was driven by a woman and sped northbound along McCormicks Rd toward Sandhurst.

The teenager said the man “reeked” of beer and cigarettes, was aged in his 20s, and was wearing jeans, a green top and blue jacket.

When Mel posted about the terrifying ordeal on the Carrum Downs locals noticeboard Facebook page, a concerned local posted a picture of a vehicle they had noticed earlier in the morning.

“I saw that car speeding at 4.30am, it turned right down Cadles Rd and it looked like a female was driving,” the woman wrote.

“I first noticed it at the roundabout on Hall and Hastings Rd.”

Mel said her usually bright and excited daughter had stayed in her room this morning and refused to go to school until her attacker was caught by police.

“Yesterday, my daughter left the house happy as usual, and she came home shaking and crying,” Mel said.

“We are supposed to be teaching our young girls to be independent and encouraging them to walk to school. This incident has changed things.

“We want to have a normal life and now my teenage daughter is traumatised and won’t go outside.”

Victoria Police said police were investigating the assault and appealed for public assistance.

“The man got out of a green sedan and approached the girl from behind and hit her on the back of the head,” a spokeswoman said.

“He yelled and swore at the girl and then got back in his vehicle and drove off towards McCormicks Rd.

“He is described as caucasian in appearance and aged in his 20s.”

She urged anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
