THERE’S an army of hungry vegetarians out there, and Steve Agi, the founder of Melbourne’s Burgerlove restaurants, knows just what to feed them.
Plant-based meat pattie substitutes have hit the menu across his South Melbourne, St Kilda, Prahran, Footscray and North Melbourne stores in a bid to accommodate vegetarian and vegan tastes.

Their new meat-free burgers, launched six months ago, tasted just as good, if not better, than some of the fake-beef products gaining traction overseas, he said.
And satisfied customers had given them their wholehearted tick of approval.
This week Burgerlove launched a brand new menu starring a fried imitation-chicken pattie — think a KFC burger without the actual chickens.
And customers could even add a side of ‘facon’ if they felt so inclined, he said.
Mr Agi assured every ingredient, right down to the condiments, was vegan friendly.
He said his vegan customers relished the opportunity to eat out with friends like any other red-blooded, burger-loving human being.
“It is a little bit more expensive than regular products, but they get the experience of bacon and cheese,” he said.
“I reckon about a year ago it (the vegan movement) started getting good traction. They love that they can come in with their non-vegan friends instead of having to go somewhere special.
“Without a doubt it’s a massively growing segment. (It’s about) allowing these people to be part of normal dining experiences.”
Burgerlove’s meat free beef and chicken patties had the same flavour as the genuine thing, he added, and the store also sells a mouth-watering selection of real beef and chicken burgers for meat eaters.
Burgerlove has a food truck that visits festivals and caters for corporate events, and Mr Agi said brand new stores in Broadmeadows and Endeavour Hills were scheduled to open by Christmas.
