VICROADS has forced the removal of two signs on Alexandra Parade supporting a Doncaster Rail line instead of the East West Link — two years after they were put up.

Yarra Council installed the signs more than two years ago in a VicRoads reserve in the middle of the busy arterial.

VicRoads regional director Patricia Liew said the council never had consent and “the signs had been previously overlooked” in routine inspections.

Yarra Mayor Jackie Fristacky said she understood VicRoads was reacting to a complaint.

She said the signs would be relocated somewhere close by in the coming weeks.

Cr Fristacky said the council would continue to lobby for public transport alternatives to the $6.8 billion East West Link, despite the State Government signing contracts late last month.

Labor has pledged to scrap the project if it wins the November state election.

Meanwhile, Cr Stephen Jolly said tenants in Clifton Hill public housing at the corner of Noone and Rutland Streets were worried they would lose their homes for the project.

But Linking Melbourne Authority spokeswoman Gemma Boucher said the property was not required and the authority would work with residents to minimise impacts during construction.
