A man is facing multiple charges after a series of fires in St Kilda and Malvern, where wheelie bins were pushed against cars or buildings and set alight.

An alleged wheelie bin arsonist has been charged after a series of fires around St Kilda and Malvern.

The first blaze was caused by pushing wheelie bins against a car and setting them alight on Patterson St in Middle Park on September 15, damaging the car and a nearby apartment building in the early hours of the morning.

The second and third fires, on October 2 and 8, were started in the same manner, with wheelie bins or boxes pushed up against vehicles or buildings and set alight.

A further two fires were started in Malvern on October 15 and 16.

Luckily no one was injured as a result of any of the fires.

Police arrested a Malvern East man, 37, after an extensive investigation, on October 16.

He was charged with two counts of criminal damage by fire with intent to endanger life, 14 counts of criminal damage by fire as well as drugs and weapons offences.

He has been remanded to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on January 10 next year.
