Wesley College students use isolation inspiration for return to school

Students at this inner east school came up with an innovative way to welcome people back on campus after a testing few months of learning while at home.

A 4.5m-tall banner featuring more than 180 photos of students and staff today welcomed the first people back to Wesley College’s St Kilda Rd campus.

Led by student leaders, the project shows many of the things which have made the community grateful while being separated in remote learning and isolation.

“In these uncertain times, it’s easy to focus on what’s not going well, rather than looking for the silver lining in everyday moments and the joy in them,” Year 12 school captains Henry Rawling and Penelope Donnan said.

“Together with the student leaders in Years 4, 9 and 12, we have come together to devise a campaign we’re calling #wesisoinspo that asks students to share small, positive moments with us.”

The student leaders asked peers to send in photos of moments which lifted them up during isolation.

Students at Wesley College returned to a giant 4.5m poster at its St Kilda Rd campus on Tuesday as a reminder of things which lifted them during their time of isolation. Pictured are student leaders Penelope Donnan, Marlo Stephenson, Anton Castle, Sibella Thiele, Daniel Millard and Henry Rawling, who worked together on the project.

The banner features a collage of images of everything from pets in sunglasses and sunsets on the beach, to keyboard lessons and chalk drawings for neighbours.

“It’s awesome to see the different ways all the students have been using their time in isolation to learn new things,” Henry said.

Penelope added that doing it “was a nice way to come together even though we’re all separated”.
