Nicholas Georgiou, 33, faced the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, November 12, requesting bail following his arrest in October after an alleged assault on his girlfriend.

He also faces serious drugs charges after police allegedly found more than $40,000 worth of methamphetamine when they searched his home.

Prahran Senior Constable John Teunissen told the court police were called by Georgiou’s building manager when he heard a woman’s screams coming from the man’s CBD apartment.

Police attended and allegedly spotted a small amount of white powder believed to be cocaine as well as a small bag of methamphetamine on the couch where Georgiou had been sitting.

More police returned later that day to search the apartment where they allegedly found more than 100 gun ammunition rounds, 56 shotgun cartridges, cocaine worth $3000, and methamphetamine with a street value of about $45,000.

They also allegedly discovered $17,000 cash in an envelope sitting on top of Georgiou’s bar fridge.

Georgiou’s lawyer Paul Stefanovic told the court the purity of the drugs was yet to be established, meaning a trafficking charge may not stack up.

Georgiou also denied the methamphetamine was his, the court heard, and his girlfriend, who told police she and Georgiou were arguing over the cleaning when police were called, had since told police she’d lied about being attacked.

She also told them that other people visited their home and left items there for “storage”.

Mr Stefanovic submitted his client could be forced to wait a year or more until the County Court was ready to hear his client’s trial due to coronavirus delays.

“He could end up doing more time in custody than is proportionate for this type of offending,” Mr Stefanovic told the court.

Police opposed Georgiou’s bail application on the basis they said Georgiou was an unacceptable risk of endangering the safety of his girlfriend and of committing further offences.

Georgiou faces charges including drug trafficking, possession, dealing with property suspected to be the proceeds of crime, make threat to kill and assault.

Ms Burnside adjourned the matter for December 7.
